Question Safety issue question (1 Viewer)

You think this guy is yelling just to be a jerk or is it possible he has a tick he cant control? This is very interesting to me. If I were you I would approach the guy and tell him your condition.

I've got a co-worker (machine shop) who loves to randomly yell "WOOOOO" loudly throughout the day. I probably hear it 6 or 8 times a day.

Number one, I'm one of those Uber focused/startles easy kind of people. I HATE being startled. I do everything I can to avoid startling others.

Number two, I've already had 3 heart attacks, and don't need another.

Is there an OSHA regulation regarding unnecessary vocal outbursts in the workplace? Aside from being wholely unprofessional, it's really starting to get on my nerves.
That exact same thing happens where I work. We even have a guy that has constant loud noise coming from his mouth all of the time. Everything from loud whistling, cat noises, dog noises, singing and imitating a tornado siren. ALL THE DAMN TIME.
It’s irritating but management does nothing. If he finds out that his constant noise bothers you, he will do everything he can to make it worse. If you get mad, he gets mad because he doesn’t think you should get mad. I know this because we almost came to blows one day. My job pays too much to get fired over that so I had to let it go. I wear ear plugs at all times now (except lunch) and keep to myself much as possible.

He's aware.

It's not a tic, or a nervous condition. He's just trying to show his "excitement/enthusiasm/whatever".

Earplugs are mandatory on the production floor, and STILL his outbursts are distracting from 75 feet away.

You should ask if they would provide noise canceling headsets. My company does, but I don't use them because I have to constantly take them off to hear anything they're that efficient.

There are OSHA requirements for Hazardous Noise, but it's highly unlikely his "Wooo" generates enough noise to cause hearing loss via impulse. Look up OSHA CFR 1910.95 for more info. This does not sound like an OSHA issue. Nose safety professionals can use equipment calibrated to industry standards to determine the level of noise produced by the "woo" as well as 8 hour monitoring of your time weighted average. I can tell you that if you work in an office setting and hear "woo" a dozen times a day, you're probably not close to exceeding the OSHA standard of 85 dBA.

This however could be a medical issue. You could speak to your primary care physician and ask about sudden loud noises and how they may impact your health. It may be reasonable to ask your physician to write a note to your employer that you not be subjected to sudden noise events which may trigger heart attack or whatever.

I forking hate people.

Good for you man. I was gonna say it may fall under your companies horseplay reg, or maybe a stretch OSHA’s general duty clause. But none of that matters now. Good luck

I was going to suggest that you throw a hammer at him next time it happens. Say you were startled and it slipped out of your hand.

Or start your own random loud at outbursts at the worst possible times ever to get on everyone else’s nerves so it becomes a thing they address for the whole shop to not allow.
