Saints must figure out a way to draft Mac Jones (2 Viewers)

And like Payton says himself if they really thought that highly of him then they would have taken him at 12.

What a genius.
He shoulda taken Colston in the first tbh. That's how the draft works I think, right?

I didn’t make my assessment on who MT played against. I watched his footwork and technique while he was playing. A WR with that kind of movement, while lacking top speed, could be a chain mover in the NFL. I knew he would be perfect in our system, but I honestly didn’t think we were going to draft him. However, I was extremely happy that we did. I’m confused. Is this a Mac Jones thread? I’m on the fence about him. With that being said, I wouldn’t mind if we drafted him.
Everyone looks good against empty space.

The only thing the saints brass had over the general public is the opportunity to conduct private workouts against pro players that could've possibly tipped them off to his future success.

Bama's QB's are one of those rare scenarios where the players actually are so good that they make the QB look like a Heisman candidate every year. Try sticking a Alabama QB behind a Texas Tech offensive line and see how they do.

It’s quite the conundrum, because the flip side to “they have all the talent they could ever desire” basically means they could have their pick of QB and chose Mac Jones. But I do agree with your sentiment.

I’m sure Keyshawn Johnson had something to do with it. MT became a highly determined individual after his freshman year. MT’s uncle knew the kind of determination he had and he wanted his nephew to be drafted by a pass happy team. I honestly don’t think MT was that high on our radar until Keyshawn contacted SP. SP liked him, but to what extent, no one really knows. That’s part of the drafting process tho. Sometimes you need that extra set of eyes or that extra piece of advice from others.

Jones will be a long time backup. He is in athletic with pretty good arm but has to get full body into throws which BAMA OL allows. His WRs are wide open. I think the same of Trask. Neither will be very good without pristine pockets which are rare in NFL. Now if he’s there when Saints draft in 3rd I’d take him but not before.

I attribute it more to Payton's penchant for drafting nfl pedigree like Ingram and Jordan more than any potentially biased reviews from his uncle.

What else was Keyshawn Johnson really going to say about his own nephew? "No, Saints don't draft him he's hot garbage."

Keyshawn knew we had interest, like other teams, but SP was the only one of those coaches that he called. MT was going to get drafted by someone, but he knew that MT would help from day 1. Like I said, he knew we had a need at WR, so it all worked out in the end. Like I also said, no one knows to what extent did SP view MT in terms of the draft. I’ve heard SP in an interview (MT’s rookie year) say that MT was way further along than he anticipated. Then, I heard Keyshawn on TV shortly after, saying “You’re welcome” to SP. Albeit in a joking manner, but he does think he had a hand in nudging SP to draft him. We all know SP LOVES OSU players. So to get the actual inside info from his own blood, could’ve been the icing on the cake. Keyshawn is a blunt person that doesn’t hold his tongue. If his nephew wasn’t worth the pick, then I honestly don’t think he would have contacted SP. He probably would have just let MT get picked wherever by whoever. The one thing we do know is.....MT made himself into an elite WR. Doesn’t matter draft position. That guy is so dang determined to be the best and I greatly admire that. I’ll ride with that guy every day/all day and twice on Sundays.

5 games with 400 yards and 3 with at least 5 tds.

5 games with 80% completion percentage on the year.

Finishes 2020 season beating Joe Burrow's passer rating record with 203.

Pretty sure he thought much the same about Trequan Smith too.

MT might have made himself into an elite wr but there was precious little EVIDENCE to indicate that he ever would be coming out of that draft.

Well, it seems like you have made up your mind regardless of what anyone says. Just go back and watch some MT plays from OSU. Come back and let me know if you see that kind jab step/hard jab step, the chopping of his feet, deception of his hips, shoulder dip deception, head deception, bursts coming out of his step, his physicality, and hands around the NCAA? Dude was so damn polished. His body control was freakishly good. Heck, you don’t even see that kind of polish prevalent in the NFL honestly. And when I say look at his technique.....I mean REALLY LOOK at all of the little nuances of his route running.

That's fine and great but what top nfl corner can you point to that he dominated at OSU or even in All-star games.

There weren't any.

I tried hard to like Thomas but there's still no way I would've selected him in round two based on workouts and prior competition.

My pre-draft assessment would not have changed based on the information available at the time.

He had a wonderful 3 cone with giant hands and an average to below average 40.

It's really great that you thought so highly of him based on a few moves vs relative unknowns and I didn't but I just don't base my judgements that way.

Kudos to you though.
