If indeed Drew does retire... (1 Viewer)

(1) Reality:

We’re going to be in CAP hell and Taysom already got paid. What’s that tell you?

Winston probably signs with the Bears or somewhere else for some decent change. Just don’t see him hanging around any longer.

Most likely drafting a young guy to develop (3rd string). Then bring in someone with a little game experience to compete with Taysom. Something like that ...

(2) Unlikely Idea:

I wouldn’t mind seeing Payton & Gruden working out a trade for Marcus Mariota. I thought he played pretty good in his one relief game for Derek Carr (vs Chargers).

Not much static around here (SSF) for Mariota I know. Lost his starting job to Ryan Tannehill (Titans) but is it possible Coach Payton could work his magic. One thing that really stood out to me is how fast he was running around that game. Checked his 40 time which was 4.48 at combine (Taysom 4.44). Talk about two burners!

The overwhelming odds are that Winston re-signs for an incentive-laden two year deal and competes with Taysom in the offseason. Whomever wins that competition will start the season, and will keep it if we are winning/competitive. If/when we struggle, the backup will have their chance to take it the rest of the way. Y'all are kidding yourselves if you think Taysom will not get every opportunity to win the job with a full offseason of QB-focused work. The only way Winston isn't in the mix is if another team outbids us, and I don't think he has rehabbed his reputation to the point that happens just yet.

AFTER next season, IF neither Hill nor Winston prove to be the answer - with Brees' dead cap hit off the books - THEN we'll make a move for a QB. In that scenario, we're probably drafting near the middle of the 1st round and have a realistic shot of drafting the next QB. Unless someone just falls into our lap, we're not making a big move for a QB this offseason.

Let's not pretend like we can't move money around and/or trade someone if there was a player out there that Payton felt was a better successor to Drew Brees than what we currently have on the roster. I just don't see Taysom as that guy because I feel like he is worth more in his gadget role than as a delicate "slide feet first QB". Feel free to bump this post in the future if I'm wrong, though.

Go for it, Who do we cut or trade to make up 25-35 million in a year when we expect the cap to be reduced.

We already have a bargain QB. We know who the potential free agents will be and the draft pool. Tell me who we have a legitimate chance of signing without gutting the team.

Last year the bandwagon was all about some ridiculous fantasy that we had some magic trick to sign Burrow.

Not saying the team has no other choice just that I can't think of any that right now seem either possible or more importantly better.

I’m just worried that should you take a chance with Taysom, and the season does not go well as you want, players like CGM and Kamara would not be happy as they feel like they are “wasting their prime years” while being elite at their positions.

Kamara already admitted that he hates losing and went as far as telling the coaches that he would not play another down for that team should they lost a certain game (in college)...Your character as a person does not change, sorry to tell you.

and there were already reports about CGM‘s camp requesting a trade sometime during this season...now if that was just a pure rumor, The. reporters wouldn't go as far Asking CGM in a press conference\interview about it unless there were A tail truth behind That rumor...CGM flat out dodged the question

point is, the QB can’t be an experiment.

disagree, but at least tell me why

While I don't pretend to be a cap expert, I trust Loomis to get our cap situation to where it can benefit us. I also don't believe Sean is satisfied with any of our backups becoming our #1 option if Brees retires.

In terms of our cap, I like Jason Fitzgerald's attempt at fixing our current cap situation:

Let me quote Jason's bottom line with Drew retired and the cuts and adjustments he calls for.

"Final Outcome
So based on the numbers above would likely need to cut Jenkins, Alexander, Brown, Easton, Murray, and Morstead. We would be a few minor moves away from having enough space to sign rookies and a few low cost free agents."

Sorry. Did I miss something in his analysis? Because I don't see any money for a top ten free agent QB in there.

Saints fans are not prepared for this question.

Regardless of who it will be; the standard will be Drew Brees and nobody is going to live up to that hype.

Right now I would say it’s Taysom Hill but I am holding out hope for Jameis. If he truly matures (I don’t think he has judging by the last Carolina game) and can limit his turnovers he would be the best option moving forward.

1) These players can't/won't demand their way out of town over taking a pathway before that pathway has even had a chance to be shown unsuccessful.
2) These players understand that we're in cap hell for one year, and that riding with the guys on the roster is the smartest play we have. We cannot afford to go after anyone else of significance without tearing down another part of the supporting cast that allows AK41 and MT13 to be successful.
3) I would bet that as they are currently teammates, AK41 and MT13 probably support TH7 and JW2 getting their shot at taking the reins after Drew retires.
4) It's not like we are going to bomb out and finish near the bottom of the league with either TH7 or JW2. The floor is probably 7-9. That's not going to be enough for either guy to keep the job moving forward, but it's not like the team is going to be rag-dolled week in and week out like the Jags and Jets.

If our current guys prove not to be the answer next season and we decided to stick with them anyway for 2022/23, that's when you're going to hear grumbling/trade demands from our star players. Not this coming offseason.

Actually, you said "top ten free agent". I only said Payton would try to look for an alternative QB that would be a better fit for our offense. Just my opinion.

The Saints got Drew to come back, allegedly, by making gestures towards Tom Brady.
Wouldn’t surprise me if we went after Phillip Rivers or Matt Ryan.
I laughed at this post but only half kidding. Brees came back on his own because Payton told him the team was signing Brady.

I'm in the minority but I actually think Matt Ryan would do well in Payton's offense with our offensive line and weapons.

Make an offer to Taylor Heinike. You could have he and Hill in camp with a mid round draft choice. And if I'm Heinike, I'd jump on those odds to be a starter at some point.

I can agree with a lot of this post. I have disagreements. We have seen Taysom Hill at QB in live action. He ain't it. Yeah, they gave him money, but I like his current role. Winston is nt it either. He simply makes too many dumb decisions on the football field to be a consistent winner. I hope we can make moves to get Stafford. That would allow us to keep Hill in his role which includes part time QB. Wildcards are Darnold and Dak. I don't know what Andy Dalton's contract is but he would be a good fit for this offense.

I have read through that piece before and yes it is doable but a lot depends on what Drew decides. Since he wrote that some of the moves are actually easier to make.
1. Alexander has gone down with a torn achillies and might be able to play until the last half of next season so letting him go with an injury settlement is easier.
2. Same with Easton and his concussion issues.
3. Murray could be replaced with a cheaper draft pick
4. I believe Morestead will retire and it was planned for when they stashed a punter on IR after training camp
5. Jenkins was seen on most of the board as a 1 year rental when he was signed and that might be correct.

He also mentions at the end that some of the moves might not be necessary if the NFLPA agrees the league to borrow from a few years future caps in order to get next years up from the $175M est. to at least equal the $198M it was this year.
