Internet date usage (1 Viewer)

A lot of internet traffic is ads. You can build some raspberry pi pi-hole ad blockers and it will help you not use as much bandwidth for ad traffic.

I have 2 pi zeros so there is some redundancy that have been working great for me.

I have one Pi that is loaded up with a retro arcade. I could just swap the sd but I’ve been looking for an excuse to get another anyway. Maybe if the newer ones are supporting retropi now I’ll look into this with the old one. Thanks.

That's not a gateway my company uses so I can't speak to it's specifics. But some general debug, can you use the gateway's UI to find all the clients connected to it? It may, or may not show the amount of bytes/packets sent/received by each client.

The UI may have a Broadband level which will show all packets ingress/egress the gateway, and you may be able to clear or reset those. May be a good idea to clear them when your billing period starts. It won't be perfect with what Cox says, but it should be in the ballpark.

I was fine without going over the cap for a long time with COX, But when Covid happened, kids were home all day , wife was home all day and we started going over. But i think what pushed me over the edge, was when i got the 4K TV. Streaming in 4K shot me way over. Luckily where i live, we have options. I switched to EATEL and they do not have a data cap, and its the same price.

Also the year I first used the internet was probably in 1994, but not sure the exact date.
Started back in like 89 or 90 I had a C64 then an Amiga and would dial up to the local BB's and surf the forums and download games.

i didn’t even think to look at the modem. The router is the only thing connected. I’ll check out it’s interface.

ah! This is useful. I just got back on Netflix and they gave me 4K to try for a month free. I don’t even have a 4K TV yet so I need to turn that off. Thanks.

Just checked pi-hole and it says it is blocking about 65% of DNS queries. That helps show how many ads are out there, even if they are not taking up that percentage of bandwidth.

Of course depending on how many sources you use to get ad domains, you could block more or fewer. Mine is currently blocking about 767k domains.
I have whitelisted a few and you can easily ad domains to whitelists.

my pi hole has been known to say a lot of crazy things. That hasn’t been one of them yet. If I had named the pI I would have called it raspberryCorn. Would have made this conversation a little more fun.
