Greta Van Fleet (formerly 'some kids that sound like Led Zeppelin') (1 Viewer)

Spotify told me to listen to this today. I did. I came away intrigued - it's definitely evoking 70s prog (Rush and Yes at times).

I def. hear Geddy Lee before I hear Robert Plant. This is very cool. I am reminded of Coheed and Cambria. Anyone else?

I heard this playing overhead while at Planet Fitness. It's apparently from 2018, but somehow it slipped right past me, and I've never heard it.
It's very Zepplin inspired. It's a pretty cool song though.....

I just can’t get into Greta Van Fleet. Something about them feels put on. Inauthentic. If I want to hear Zeppelin or Rush, I’d rather listen to them, not a few obsessed kids trying to be them.

I think that’s totally valid, the Pitchfork review of their second album (gave it a grotesque score of 1.9 out of 10) said it sounds like it was created by an algorithm. I agree it was bad and they’re very derivative.

But their first EP was cool and they have had a couple of decent tracks since then - maybe literally two. I haven’t listened to the new album but willing to recognize that they were very young on that first record (teens) and perhaps they will develop more original work. This new stuff certainly seems more complex.

I think it’s ironic that people have hang ups about GVF because they sound like Zeppelin. Do people not realize that Led Zeppelin was copying American blues musicians when they first started out? Robert Plant and Jimmy Page have admitted that they “borrowed“ from early American blues singers and guitar players.

Folks: Led Zeppelin is not the root of rock n roll. Everybody borrows from every one else. That’s been going on since the beginning of time.

I agree, most folks would be surprised if they knew how many songs Zep did were actually covers of old blues songs.

But nobody sounded like Zep, their sound was totally original. IMO Chuck Berry was the root of rock and roll....

There’s a difference between “borrowing” and “copying.”

I beg to differ. Go listen to Janice Joplin live, then after, immediately listen to Led Zepplin I. It isn't hard to hear that Robert Plant was trying to emulate the same exact thing Janice was doing. That is most definitely un-original. It's why they dubbed Robert Plant the male version of Janice Joplin (he even copied her mannerisms).
But guess what? Janice Joplin was copying Bessie Smith. And I'm quite sure Bessie Smith was copying some blues singer from her time. It goes on and on.
My point is; why do people hold GVF to one standard but don't hold the Stones, Zep, or Janice Joplin to the same standard?
Good music is good music.
I just appreciate the fact that a bunch of teenagers chose to honor the spirit of rock and roll and carry on the torch.
Even Robert Plant himself gives his blessing to Greta's lead singer.

There may be common elements between Joplin & Plant. But Robert Plant is still Robert Plant. Even if he was influenced by Joplin & others. And Jimmy Page is Jimmy Page even if he was heavily influenced by Robert Johnson & others. And John Bonham is John Bonham. For all the borrowing that took place, Zeppelin still had its own unique sound. GVF doesn’t seem remotely interested in just being themselves. They’re trying to duplicate others.

There's worse things a group of kids could be doing to try and make it big. I say more power to them. When was zepplins or rush's last album again? When are their next albums coming out?

I wasn't talking about Zep as individuals, of course Plant and Page and all of them borrowed from others, I'm not denying that (and kudos to Mamba borrowing does not equal copying). But the collective sound that was Led Zeppelin....original....IMO....

I haven't heard Greta yet but look forward to soon. I fully support your right to appreciate what you think is good music....

It’s weird to think about the arts that people want to preserve in amber and those that need to be dripping in fresh paint
- rock/rap has precious few cover bands, but jazz is like 85% 'other people's works' and orchestra audiences seem allergic to new work of any kind

ballet is 95% 'classics' whereas in Modern it was almost hacky if you restaged your own work too much (and there's certainly hardly any Rep company doing other Modern pieces - that's usually only done by university dance departments)

if you want to get anyone to come see theatre, better make sure you are staging a play that's been done 100s/1000s of times before
