Question When do you think Brees will anounce his retirement. (1 Viewer)

Respectfully...that's an unbelievably unrealistic expectation. He would be passing up more money in that one year than you or I will see in our lifetimes. Even the amount he gave up in his contract restructure is below market value for him. In fact, it was unbelievable that Jameis took that same amount of money to be a backup. Heck, Chase Daniels made a ton more than that to be a backup. Compound that with the fact that he has a huge salary waiting for him as a broadcaster.

If in your early 60s your boss said, 'Hey you've had a great career and made lots of money. I know you're thinking about retiring soon. Want to work for free for the next year before you retire?' you'd laugh in his face. He would be passing up orders of magnitude more money...to work insanely hard, get physically beat up, to try to win again at a year older with a depleted roster due to the salary cap. That's an absolutely bonkers notion.
You make some very good points but neither of us know what’s in his head. The deal he has with NBC means he will still have to be doing the kind of study and preparation he does as a active player with the major exception of any workouts. I hope the team drafts a QB even if he comes back. I guess my dream scenario would be Drew back for a year with the Jones kid as his backup learning from him.

So dream scenario is giving up this next season going with Brees, putting our other players another year older just to take up a roster spot to train a rookie when our roster as good as it is. Okay.

on another point, will there be floats going around the inside of the dome each game for his farewell tour?

I wonder if he/the team are waiting because they think the league will penalize them if he restructures and immediately retires.

I don’t think going with Brees would be giving up. I think that he is much better than Hill or Winston if we are able to keep him on the team. I don’t really think Drew will be back and I feel like we will draft a QB with our first pick.

I think reply 2 was correct. He needs to retire after june 1 for salary cap reasons. So I doubt he will announce it until then, even though his contract makes it obvious he’s not coming back.

I agree with this. I think you have to at least show some “possibility” that he intends to play - but you still internally move about business as though he will be gone.
Then you have to worry about the league saying the saints knew better and that they colluded with Brees to skirt the system.

But, if that’s their intent, you can play it out further by putting Drew on PUP to start the 2021 season. Doesn’t he need labrum surgery or something like that? It would legitimize the salary move, and give the Saints the option of running with Jameis, Taysom or someone else to see how things go. Drew could play the roll of ace in the hole, only if needed.

Might as well have the option of using him in a pinch. It would be a creative approach to maximizing dead money.

You bring up a good point about the surgery on the shoulder. You would think if he was coming back, he would have it done by now.

He can announce his retirement anytime but not file the paperwork until after June 1. I think it comes this week as it will have been 2 weeks since the SB. I am sure Drew didn't want to take any attention away from Tampa.
