I agree that they will load as much as possible into signing bonus to reduce the 2021 cap hit.

Saints are going to have to guarantee over $20m per year on avg. though, no matter how they chop it up. There is not an NFL starter on their second contract that makes less than $20 mil per year.

I think the Saints need to value the likelihood he will be a starter and pay him accordingly. I don't think they are in a position to take on big cap hits versus risk. From what I know I'd put him somewhere between Bridgewater and Fitzpatrick when they were FAs (not comparing trajectories after being signed). If he gets paid more elsewhere I think we will be fine. We have a good enough roster (which will be better without taking on that money) and we can regroup with our options in 2022. Maybe we get lucky with a cheaper risk in 2021.

I think you have to pull the trigger on Winston, because if you do not sign him and also don’t bring in a Wilson or Watson - you are essentially telling the rest of your playoff roster (and fans) that you are building for the future more than trying to remain a legitimate contender now.

Hard for me to believe the Saints brain trust is going to let the best defense they’ve had since the Dome Patrol, along with the best RB and WR they’ve ever had waste the prime they have left developing a rookie or rolling with Fitz, Alex Smith, Trubisky, or Taysom Hill.

I think they’ll sign Winston to a market value contract that is set up to accommodate cap issues. I think the Saints front office seeing what happened with the Patriots not having a good successor in place for Brady will influence all this as well.

Like I said I put him between Teddy and Fitz as FAs. I don't think either of those scream legit contender as a QB. I think our roster is the only thing that screams legit contenders. To be convinced at QB I think you have to bring in a top 10 QB or at least some guaranteed stability like a Derek Carr at minimum. You can roll the dice and hope your roster carries you and you get lucky at QB. As a fan Jameis doesn't sell me on a Superbowl. I think we can make the playoffs with many QBs.

I think Winston will be better than you likely do. I think CSP and Saints locker room feel the same as I do. Fitz and Teddy B are much more limited at their best than Winston. Payton believes he can get the best out of his QBs.

If Winston signs with NO (and I believe he will), I think the deal will likely be a 3 yr contract with the last year voidable for both sides, that pays like $21m, $24m, and then $30m on the voidable year. $40m guaranteed in signing bonus and salary for the first two years that can spread out the cap hit over all three years if either side rejects the third year when they get there.
That's way too much for Winston. He hasn't proven that he can take a team to the playoffs . No way...no how....NO ONE fears Winston...NO ONE......I would just pay him like Teddy..8 mill a year and he can prove himself...

Until tomorrow he's getting cut, or you let him walk in FA or he retires. All that money is owed now. The more you push it back the more you lock into the player. Eventually it will affect your team.

Why do you think we are so tight against the cap the next two years?
Winston has no hit against the cap for 2021 since he was signed to just a 1 year minimum contract with a year year charge as signing bonus. He won't be a FA until the start of the league year next month.

I'm not 100% sure what you are referring to? Maybe you were talking about me referring to tomorrow? That was a figurative tomorrow as he was using it. I'm talking about a future contract that gets accelerated when it ends for whatever reason.

Because revenues in the NFL are dramatically low after reduced attendance due to COVID-19?

The Saints have been right against the cap for the better part of the last 14 years. It doesnt seem to have been an issue that prohibited the Saints from signing free agents or rookies to their contracts. Managing the cap is just something else a front office does, along with scouting players and acquiring talent last year, this year and every year. In 3 years, the Saints will be tight against the cap as well. I don't know why people aren't used to this fact of life by now.

We don't sign players due to the cap all the time. Ingram and Clowney are recent examples.

Regardless of the actual cap number, we are far and away one of the most over the cap teams in the NFL. This is not one of our typical tight against the cap years. Even if the cap was 220 mil we would still be 30 mil over. No other team would be over 210. We are typically near the bottom with the 5-10 teams with the least cap space. This is a whole different animal, it's more reminiscent of those 2014-2016 years.

The most comparable year was 2015, we were 22+ mil over the cap. That year we didn't have any big free agency guys we brought back. The biggest moves we made were signing Brandon Browner, CJ Spiller and trading for Dannell Ellerbe's contract. In today's money that would be a CB for 6.5mil/yr, a RB for 5.2 mil/yr and a LB for 4.3 mil/yr. That's it, everything else was a cheap minimum type contract (we did make the Graham/Unger trade but money-wise it was mostly a wash). Jameis, M.Williams or Hendrickson by themselves could match those in 1 contract.

We are in this position because we pushed back contracts to get the best team possible around Drew. You have to pay eventually. It will be a lean year (or two) and they will have to be smart.

You would offer to pay him like Teddy. He would likely reject the offer and sign somewhere else.

Folks have to stop thinking that Winston is under contract or that there's no market for him. Winston would be a fool not to get to free agency next month and at least have conversations with the rest of the league.

The Saints are not really in control of this situation. I'm sure that last year there was this same talk about what the Saints should offer to the Teddy. Note that he's no longer here.

He wont get $20 mill on the market...Bank on it...If he does, let him walk...We roll up or down with the HILL...:)

Absolutely false.

Ingram's agent wanted more guaranteed money for his client. The Saints placed a value for Ingram and when he refused to agree to that value, the Saints moved on.

The same goes for Clowney. The Saints are not going to pay unlimited monies for these players. They set a limit and dont exceed it, regardless of the player. They can fit all of these guys under the cap if they need to do so with voidable years, asking other players to restructure, etc. There is ALWAYS a way to sign a free agent if they want them badly enough, but the Saints are notorious for setting a value and not exceeding it. That's just smart roster management.

If the cap doesn't matter, why would you care about the value. You can always figure out the money just get the talent in here.

And less than 12 months later the Panthers no longer want Teddy and we’re about to get a 3rd round pick for him. We can do the same with Jameis if someone wants to overpay him.

Absolutely. Just give everyone $30M a year and then have them renegotiate the next week to fit it all under the cap.

The cap matters because you have to fit the top 51 contracts under it. Part of the plan to do that is assigning value tonplayers, positions, production, etc. It also sets precedent for future contracts. Each one of them is planned with wiggle room. If you weren't so caught up with trying to "be right" you'd understand all of this.

I'm not right or wrong. I have no opinion on this matter. I'm just telling you what the Saints have done in the past. If there is one thing I've learned it's that past behavior is a pretty good indicator of future behavior, especially when it has led to success.
