The cap matters because you have to fit the top 51 contracts under it. Part of the plan to do that is assigning value tonplayers, positions, production, etc.

Exactly my point. The cap matters. You have to make hard decisions and we have made them in the past. Paying a player 30mil/yr is paying him 30mil/yr. Doesn't matter what you pay him in 2021 you will pay for that eventually so it all matters. Sounds like we agree to me.

It matters.

It matters a lot less when you have cap people like Harley and Loomis who pre-program loopholes into contracts.

It matters even less when you’re talking about solidifying the most important position on the field and you have those same cap experts working on his deal.

Yeap, they are better than most and you need to get the value at QB right. It's your most costly position. There will be a number though.

Of course the cap matters, but also it doesn't matter.

I'd make his contract a $4 million base and the rest incentives.

$500k for every TD you score minus $500k for every turnover you make.

If he has the kind of season we want him to have (30 TD and 10 INT, 5 rushing TD and 2 fumbles), that equals

$15 million

Winston could end up playing for free under those terms. I suppose that is one way to get under the cap LOL.

If the Saints resign Winston I hope it's for a contract similar to this one...

Cam's is a one-year deal, I doubt they go that route with Winston. I think a 2-3 depending on the money because you want to keep him signed in case he meets or exceeds expectations.

Well, we could do a one year prove it deal, but the escalators could be manipulated to hit next year.

Incentives are written into some contracts to pay a player for reaching certain performance criteria. Incentives come in two varieties – Likely To Be Earned (LTBE) and Not Likely To Be Earned (NLTBE) – each of which has different Salary Cap implications.

NLTBE Incentives charged to the following year’s Salary Cap.

Create incentive deemed unlikely to be earned. You can fit Winston on a one year $6 million cap hit if you want...

I could see an $8 million dollar base.

Then, stuff it with about $10 million of incentives. Know Loomis... Tie $5 million to <15 INT and another $5 million to playoff berth

You better hope Chicago gets Russ, because they blow that deal up in a heartbeat with a fully gtd One year deal

He doesn't want to be locked in multiple years if he exceeds expectations. He wants to get to that 30mil/yr contract just like everyone else does. My money is on a 1-year deal if he signs. If it's more than 1 year it's going to be 20+mil/yr.

If somehow Payton and Loomis decide they want to sign Winston, I have no doubt that Loomis will find a way to make the dollars work. That said, the Saints still need to clear almost $18 million more from the cap to be able to be in compliance with cap rules at the start of the league year AND sign their draft picks. I have trouble envisioning a scenario in which they can get under the cap AND sign Winston to a contract he would accept. If the cap figure is just $10 million for Winston this year, the Saints have to clear $28 million more. Even signing Lattimore and Ramcyzk to extensions wouldn’t get close to where they need to be. So who else is left to cut or restructure in order to sign Winston? I don’t think he’s worth that and I don’t want anymore cuts to accommodate his new contract. The vote here is tacoes.

If he is your starting QB, then you pay him more than TH7. I went with $17.5 million. Which is disgustingly cheap for a starting QB.....may be a little insulting actually

TH will not get 17.5 this year (his numbers will get reworked), even though that’s what is on the books and we can’t pay Winston more then 7 - 10 mil based on our cap situation in addition to paying our draft picks. The only person we would pay more than 10 is Russell Wilson and that would be hard to do without major holes that we wouldn’t be able to fill this year. Just my opinion though and you never know where Loomis will find extra cap space.
