We have a Superbowl caliber defense and we should try to keep it together for one more year. (1 Viewer)

I think the only player you gonna have to lose is Trex.

Restructure Cam
Extend Jack Rabbit on a two year deal
Resign Williams
Extend Lattimore
Extend Malcolm Brown if possible
Resign Rankin to as close to a one year Vet minimum.

We really can't lose both interior pieces. Maybe just one.

Cut/Resign Kwon to a two year deal. I don't think he'll be 100% till atleast mid season.

Draft in the 1-3 rounds depending on how the board falls...
CB/ DL and possibly trade up for a LB in the 1st round

The only offensive move that I would make in the draft is to get a 3 level WR for our next QB and more oline depth. If there isn't a coverage linebacker within reach. I rather opt to get a WR to stretch the field. Move Taysom to TE/Slot as his natural position and just motion him different position at the line of scrimmage. I want to see Taysom in a playmaker role on the field atleast 70% of the snaps. Let a playmaker make plays.

I really like the idea of resigning Kwon. He has a great chance of being healthy when it matters, the postseason. Saints can draft a LBer but it is very rare for a player to be a difference maker at that position in thier rookie year.

Coverage LB are always projects in their rookie year. I remember how everyone want that coverage linebacker from LSU. He had a pretty rough rookie year.

I like. but this is nearly impossible with our cap space.

All I hear from some on this forum is we wont' be able to do this and we won't be able to do that, We won't be able to sign our FA's or bring in any FA's because it will be impossible or nearly impossible because of the lowering of the cap. Well some of you are forgetting that we have Mickey Loomis, and I guarantee he has a plan in place to re-sign or bring in any FA they want. I can see us losing maybe one player on defense. Just have a little faith that our front office will get it done.

uh, no. This is not Monopoly money

Two of our best defensive players (Cam and Demario) are getting up there in age. I worry about regression.

That ain't happening. The defense will be broken up. This team has too much cap overage to keep this team together. This will be the beginning of the rebuild. Sad to say.

Last year we had one of the best defenses in the NFL, one of the best special teams in the NFL and a mediocre offense. With a better QB and losing a lot of big money defensive and high-rent special teams players, here's what I see in the Saints next year.

Next year we will have a better offense, a worse defense and a worse special teams. If QB play is better than average, we should win 10 games. Do we win the division? It all depends on how much Tampa Bay can hold onto. Atlanta and Carolina will not be rising next year. They will still be searching for their new identities under new coaches. Tampa has a challenging task with their many free agents. The Saints could possibly win the division if Tampa falls off enough.

I'm not stupid and I know it's not monopoly money. Loomis can restructure existing contract and make some of that money in to signing bonuses and spread it out to later years, He can also extend contracts and backload them. There's plenty of things he can do to get under the cap and sign the players they want to keep. I'll trust there judgement more than I will yours.

Keep this defense together. Restructure and backload. Draft replacements. I think outside of QB, the offense is set. I'd restructure Terron too. Maybe draft BPA as far as oline goes. I haven't been keeping up with who has entered the draft, but if a stud Olineman is available whenever we pick, do that. Grab the best LB and CB also. I trust in our scouting department, so I'm sure they are on top of all this.

I disagree that the D is Super Bowl caliber. NFL Network played the Saints/Packers game from last season and Rogers scorched them on 3 (I believe) long plays.

I do agree they improved a great deal.

Even if we were to keep the 2020 defense completely in tact, we would still be two players short of a Super Bowl caliber defense: a complementary side-to-side LB to play with Davis, and a bonafide impact edge rusher. We want Davenport to be that guy on the edge, but he's not. Cam is getting older and always was more of an all-around end (especially good at setting the edge against the run). T Rex is close but no cigar. We couldn't do to the Chiefs what the Tampa D did to them in the Super Bowl. We were very good on D, but not as good as Tampa. If we are to take the next step, we need to find a way to stay very good on D, but elevate the offense back to a Payton-level squad. IMO, QB is the big question mark. If Jameis really is ready, then our first priority ought to be to get that side-to-side LB. (Kwon cannot be relied on to stay healthy, even if we can resign him.) Maybe, though, we ought to go out and get Wilson unless the market drives his price too high? Hard to say. We also need to get better at WR and receiving TE. I agree that Taysom's best role would be a hybrid TE/H-back.

The Saints probably could do this but there is only so much restructuring that they can do and they will be in the same situation in a year or two. Constant restructuring is bad for the salary cap in the long run.

This doesn't make sense. The only time when we have to pay it is on our term. As long the NFL exist. You might as well treat the cap in 5 year windows.
