I just thought I'd chime in the new LOW NFL salary cap number. I have a feeling that after last year and what Disney is saying, that the salary cap may keep coming down. All that to say, I think that either one of two things need to happen. Either they cap the qb salary somewhere between $25-$30mil. max! or designate one position that doesnt count against the cap. Because if they keep paying players like Mahomes who i am a fan of that kind of money they won't be able to field a competitive team! Cap management is a must. i'm reading that Dak wants $40milyr. FOR WHAT?? He hasn't done a thing yet? Matt Ryan $30mil+ hasn't done much except for one year. i can go on and on. I'd like to know your thoughts on the matter. fire away........................BTW Drew and Brady have been playing for roughly $25mil for a while now.................they understand the need for other star players.

I been saying this for years. This ALL of this started when (then-St. Louis) Rams gave a rookie Sam Bradford a HUGE contract w/o even playing a down. So the old & new upbring players took advantage of that situation. And some of the players, who got paid, don't even lived up to the huge payday.

The NFL needs to start implementing salary caps per each positions.

For examples (these are only numbers from the top of my head)

QBs : $12-15M per year
OLs: $9-12M per year
WRs: $8-9M per year
RBs: $5-8M per year
TEs: $5-8M per year.
KIckers/Punters: $3-5M per year

And do the same thing for the defensive side if the ball.

These players make enough money to live off for years to come, if they are smart w/ their financials

The NFLPA WILL NEVER agree to that.

Nah. Salary cap is going to rebound and keep going up thanks to the new TV deal.

The Disney stuff was just that they didn’t want to pay DOUBLE what they currently are like every other network is. So they “settled” on $2.6 billion (up from $2 Billion) whereas every other network is looking at doubl their payout from $1 to $2 billion.

Bottom line: cap ain’t going anywhere but up after 21, lol.

The cap should be set at $225-$250 million. This will account for contract inflation and future TV deals.
All player’s salaries should be guaranteed. There is no reason why a physically demanding sport can’t guarantee contracts).
Teams can figure out how to properly compensate whoever and at whatever position. With this salary cap, no player on any team will go hungry or won’t be able to provide for their families.

This is a great point. I’ve always thought there should be an individual cap %... no single player can make more the X%...

If you think about it, 53 players (plus) on a team and only about 10 of them make the REALLY big money. You would think the roster’s “middle class”, that constitutes half of each team, would want the cap on salary per person so they don’t get squeezed out all the time so teams can pay QB’s a disproportionate amount.

I’m not saying it can’t be a big number (%) because in many ways, the QBs deserve it.

The problem is see is that QB don’t always get paid cuz they’re great, they get paid cuz the alternative is a QB that SUCKS because there are not enough good QBs to go around.

I agree with you except on this part. The League Minimum right now is $610,000. Before the new deal it was still almost $500,000. If a player can’t not “ go hungry or provide for their families” on that then they are doing something truly wrong because the rest of the population doesn’t make close to that in a year. I do get what your saying, but if a player or ex-player and their families are going hungry that’s because of them not their salary. I’d gladly go be a tackling dummy for $610,000 a year and you wouldn’t hear a single complaint.

Yes! I resisted replying to this but if you’re smart, you play ONE season, after taxes and paying the agent, you should start your life with $200k plus...

Anyone would be thrilled to start their life at 25ish with an advantage like this.

First thing I said, too.

I mean, these are all great if-you-live-in-a-vacuum ideas but ain't never happening.

Absolutely I agree with you 100%. The “go hungry or provide for their families” was tongue and cheek regarding that one football player awhile back that made that comment. Forgot what his name was. I just feel that setting the salary cap that high, leaving it at that amount, a team can properly disburse the money all around throughout the team. Even STs and 2nd/3rd stringers.

I withdraw my “meh” lol

but, if you think about it, generally speaking, starters play more snaps and should get paid more, their body takes more punishment. Also, people don’t come to see Bobby Noname, they pay to see the big names and they deserve more.

I feel like it might seem like I’m contradicting myself but, I think a player should be able to get more for being better, not just cuz he’s filling a roster spot.

Having said that, I do think there should be a individual cap % limit so there is more money for the rest of the players on the team to try to get a piece of instead of it all going to the QB and crumbs for players 11 thru 53

Right; and that’s something the NFLPA may agree to. Since they need to serve all their members.

I think that was part of the discussion with the NBA this offseason. Certain big-name players wanted to wait until after Christmas to start the new season. But those players were also likely the same ones who had already made a ton of $ in their careers.

So when TV networks pushed back because of how much $ they made on Christmas games, the PA had to explain to those same players that the guys making minimum $ contracts were going to need every penny bc of what’s happened with the pandemic, etc. It was a bit of a concession that you could see football players agreeing to on a bigger scale.

That’s my theory anyway, lol.

Wasn't that our own Charles Grant?

So what happens with all that extra money leftover if the stars are being capped so low compared to their current earning potential? Are you keeping the same overall salary cap? The same requirements for spending floor? If so then you’re probably paying scrubs high 7 figures and mid level guys 8 figures.
