So, I went to Total Wine this weekend and picked up a bottle of Woodford Rye, Makers' 46, and Smooth Ambler: Contradiction pictured below. I've really been into Rye recently and the Woodford Rye is good, but I still probably like Bulleit Rye better. I haven't had a chance to try the Makers' 46 yet. But, I was really surprised how good the smooth Ambler: Contradiction is. I partially bought it just because I though the label was interesting, but also because I had done some research on it and it looked interesting. Smooth Ambler is a distiller in West Virginia. Contradiction is a blended Bourbon. I think it's made with a wheated bourbon that Smooth Ambler distills and blended with a high rye Bourbon from Indiana (likely MGP). Anyway, I think it's really good. It opens with honey that quickly gives way to cinnamon and then a long dry finish. It has a really good mouth feel with lots of dense flavor with a really long finish. I highly recommend this if you like rye or cinnamon.

So, I had another glass of the Smooth Ambler: Contradiction last night and it tasted totally different to me. It's really odd. Maybe it's because of what I ate each night or that I had some Woodford Rye before the Contradiction the first time, but last night I tasted very little cinnamon or spice. It was much more of a sweet cherry flavor (like Maker's Mark). It was still good, but just tasted wildly different to me.

Neck pour vs open pour... it happens to me a lot.

I finally found a bottle of Smokewagon Uncut Unfiltered and I and drinking a glass right now and smoking a Rocky Patel cigar on a very cool evening...

I haven't found a Rye I really enjoy yet, but I also haven't tried very many mid-tier ones yet and I certainly haven't tried any top-tier ones. I'm still fairly new to Bourbon and have more of those I want to try first. That being said, cinnamon is one of my favorite flavors and I've heard of some cinnamon bombs and would like to try something along those lines.

Angels Envy Rye finished in rum casks is pretty amazing although it does cost a bit

Stopped by the best liquor store in the area and came across a Doc Swinson's 15 year release #11 the other day. I think I'll watch some old Drew on NFL Network this afternoon and give it a try.

It's a good whiskey, but I don't think it lives up to the price.

Also, not a big fan of the Rocky Patel last night. Good draw, but not much flavor at all. Who are the cigar smokers, here? Do we need to start a cigar thread? I still consider myself a novice.

I haven't been around cigars in forever. My parents quit smoking when I was 15 or so, and growing up, my grandfather smoked tobacco pipes. I liked the smell of the pipes and cigars. Hated cigarettes tho. Parents did smoke weed for a bit too. That definitely was it's own flavor compared to everything else.

I did 3 reviews in the drinking thread of some blended scotches I got thru my flaviar membership. I don't usually go with blended but figured what the hell

2 Of the 3 are very good for their price point if you can find them and are interested.
Black Bull Kyloe was very good for the $30 I saw it for online and weighs in at 50% ABV. I have a 30 year old bottle of it that I have never opened and wanted to get an idea of what Black Bull put out

Compass Box Spice Tree was REALLY GOOD in the $60 range. This was the third scotch I have tried from them and all have been good but this one just seemed like it was perfectly crafted for me. I will be hunting this one down since I have never seen it locally

I used to be a big cigar smoker, but that ended when I had to have heart bypass surgery at age 34. :covri:

Anyway, I always like Arturo Fuente cigars, particularly the ones with the Sungrown wrappers.

I've always wanted to try the Angle's Envy Rye but I've never seen it on a shelf. Maybe I just don't look enough or I just have bad luck, but I never see any of the rare stuff like any of Pappy, E.H. Taylor, Weller, etc.

I did finally try Four Roses Single Barrel last night and I really liked it. The only other high rye bourbon I have tried is Basil Hayden which I like, but it's only 80 proof. The Four Roses Single barrel is 100 proof and I like it a lot more.

i'm in that number, but after 25 years trying everybody, i'm set in my ways

always liked rp cigars and still have some 90s and 92s, but anybody can make a meh cigar

most of what i smoke now are erdm oscuros, plus the dry aged dog-walkers yatwoman brings me from europe

always ready to discuss, as the art of cigarmaking fascinates me

I will admit that I have never had a batch of Angel"s Envy bourbon or rye that was worth the price. Im glad I tried it. It's not a bad bourbon, but it ranks kinda low in the "bang for your buck" category. I probably won't buy another bottle.
