On Nick Underhill’s most recent Saints Talk podcast, he and his co-host discussed some of the areas of need that the Saints still need to address before next season... among those were CB, pass rusher, and LB.
While discussing LB, Underhill made a point to mention Chase Hansen... and how much the Saints like him. He had an outstanding camp, but unfortunately injuries have held him back at the NFL level thus far. Nick mentioned how Hansen has the athleticism and speed to play that Kwon Alexander role, and also mentioned how Hansen is a former SS during his time at Utah. He also stated that Hansen may well be ahead of Zack Baun in terms of winning the job and contributing in the near future.
I think a bunch of folks might have written-off Hansen after his first 2 seasons were grounded before they ever left the ground because of injuries, but if he gets healthy and stays healthy, he could be a huge surprise.

Another way of the Saints shooting for high-end production at a cheap rate.

I can’t help but say this... absolutely nothing has indicated that there is a reason to “like this guy” and while I hope he’s the next undrafted free agent becomes a star, the reality of this seems like the past when the team hands a load of BS to a reporter who then sells the fans that we have a solution on the team.

I’m not falling for it until I see some plays made on the field that proves he’s more then a undrafted guy that has a couple tools.

he very well may be ahead of Baun but we haven’t seen much from him yet either... although I do realize he’s a project.

Historically under the Payton/Loomis ERA, has a linebacker drafted by the Saints ever actually panned out? T Hendrickson was technically a LB but converted to DL. I honestly cannot think of one.

Edit: This is not to say Baun won't pan out either. He has all the potential too.

This is not saying that Baun is doing bad. It is saying that Hansen may be ahead of Baun in the outside linebacker position that Alexander played last year.

It makes sense to me. Baun is not a cover linebacker. He is better attacking the line of scrimmage to go after the quarterback or the run for a negative play.

They are just different and may be playing a different, complementary role next season.

wth is up with Baun? He has athleticism, size, was a Butkus award finalist and first team All-American in college. Why do we continually fail to coach up our Linebackers?

Baun was an DE/EDGE guy for Wisconsin and he’s transitioning to off-ball LB with the Saints.
I don’t think the Saints have given up on him by any means, but his rookie year was largely a wash because of COVID and no “real” offseason.

I mean, we can say the same for Davenport, Peat, Armstead, etc. Don't have many options to have this mentality with our cap issues, heh.
