CBS Sports just released an article about the proposed rule changes for the 2021 season...

Among them was this:

Expand jersey number options for certain positions. If this passes, the rule would allow running backs, linebackers and defensive backs to wear No. 1-19 and wide receivers could wear No. 1-19 (along with their normal 80-89). This rule has been proposed by the Chiefs.

It would be weird to see NFL WRs, CBs, and LBs wearing single-digit numbers, but I think it would also be pretty cool.

The rest can be viewed here:

The fact that this rule still exists has always been weird to me. What does it matter what number they wear? Because of some archaic rules? Come on now, lighten up Roger. And let guys wear 0 and 00 if they want.

I actually like the rules as they are, I do like to follow players by numbers on replays, trying to understand what is happening.

Right now, I sometimes feel confused when a linebacker wears a 40s number, thinking it is a safety coming down to help.

But I am old, and I like things the way they were. I do like receivers wearing 80s.

Some numbers do matter, like for the offensive line. They can only wear 50-69, all of which are used to designate ineligible receivers. Extra olinemen have to report that they're eligible receivers before lining up.

For every other position group it really shouldn't matter though.

This is just the NFL distracting players from what they are doing in the grand scheme. 17 game schedule and such. They don’t give, without taking. Just wait until they drop the 18 game season bombshell. Then players will get to where any color shoes (without permission to charity), tape, armbands, etc.

agree.( But I think it's 50 to 79😜)

I’m not positive but I think the number rule is there so coaches can easily identify what package the opposing team is putting on the field and can sub in the correct package.

But, with the NFL becoming a 24/7/365 billion dollar industry, if a coach doesn’t know every player’s name and number on the other team that week, they need to watch more film.

Personally I am from the 80s of watching football and I am use to certain numbers associated with certain positions. 80s for wide receivers, 60s to 70s for offensive line. 50s to 70s for defensive line and linebackers. Single digit to teens are quarterbacks.

But whatever. Not a big deal.
