Analyzing the Saints Wide Receiver Group as A Threat in 2021 (1 Viewer)

A 42 year old Brees - who was a shell of himself at times - was still a top 5-10 QB in the NFL, and it's not even debatable... We will be replacing one of the greatest players to ever grab a football... with either Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill in all likelihood this year...

It will be pressing, and extremely likely that there will be a significant drop off in offensive production as a result...

We need to take mitigating steps to stem that regression if we can...

I don't disagree about needs on defense... I disagree on priority.

I agree that we disagree on priority. I think we were hamstrung with Brees at QB last year....I think the strength of our offense (particular our offensive line) is running the football. I think our young offensive lineman will improve, we already have the pieces in place and if we can get just good (we don't need great) QB play we will be fine....we will see. I'm certainly not opposed to adding a WR and TE later in the draft....

Love CGM...assuming the crazy doesn’t get out of whack. I love Harris...but he’s a 10-20% snap type of guy...too valuable to the return game. I love Callaway...our best chance to have a legit #2. TQS is a solid #3-4 guy. He’s fine in his current role as a blocker and situational guy...I wouldn’t expand his role.

Trautman may be solid but we don’t have a great move TE type. I do think we’d benefit by adding another talented WR. Lots of good ones...so many one in round 2-3.

Our running game helps our receiving game and vice versa. However, if you don't have a legit "stretch the field " receiver, the D will crowd the box. I say it's a must to find a burner with good size and hands.

Another fo describe the Saints WRs
HOPE!!!!😂
That is the most absolute perfect term to describe it!!!
Another term to describe the Saints WR group, injury riddled. If M.T can stay healthy then itll make things doable if not, expect the offense to sputter mightily.

Teams will be blanketing Kamara and its highly doubtful that Either Taysom or Winston can Utilize Practice Squad or street free agents as well as Brees did.

8-1. 8-1 with a bottom of the barrel QB in Taysom and a middle of the pack guy in TB. The Saints are a Taysom Hill start away from being undefeated with out Brees. Does that automatically equal success without Drew? Of course not, but with a lot of that core team left and specifically the mastermind himself in SP, you're being willfully ignorant if you say Winston or Taysom couldn't match exactly what Drew did for the majority of last season.

It will be interesting to see this year. I feel the WR corps is probably better than we think. It’s hard to stay healthy and operate in the traffic and hit zone that they have had to the last couple of years with the routes getting shorter. Either of the 2 QBs on the roster have the arm to get the longer routes in and open things up, thereby instead of having them in a place where LBs or heavier safeties can take shots, they are more 1-1 on DBs and lighter faster safeties. It will be interesting

The unit is a threat to our success as it stands right now. We have one WR to be feared.
We’d have two, but Deonte will never stay healthy if they continue to try and utilize him as a WR. We need to draft another WR to go along with MT, a burner.

I trust in Smith I feel like he wasn’t given the opportunity. I feel like Smith out the slot can give up 55-60 catches 850 yards 8 TDs on the outside with a nice No.3 I feel like his peak is 70-75 catches 1,100 yards 10TDs in a prove it year .
Either way it goes for our sake I hope I’m right because he’ll be out 2 at worse 3 receiver

The only 4.2 wr outside of Jalen Waddle in this class is Anthony Schwartz and he should likely be a top priority if the deep ball is very important to the staff moving forward.

People love to criticize Brees for having a washed up noodle arm but even Hill and Winston will need a guy like Schwartz to throw to.

Schwartz is probably even faster than Waddle after running a 4.26.

I'm calling it right now.

The top wrs the Saints are likely looking at are the best 3 cone guys:

Elijah Moore
Jaelon Darden
Simi Fehoko
Amon-ra St. Brown
Jacob Harris

And the 4 top deep threats

Terrace Marshall
Dyami Brown
Anthony Schwartz
Tamarrion Terry

Pretty sure they will pick one or two of these guys and probably Zach Davidson at TE.

I'll check back later to see if I'm right.

I don’t think we necessarily need a burner...Harris fills that role. I think we really could use a do it all guy like Emmanuel Sanders. Versatility is incredibly important for matchups. Right now the Saints really only have Kamara as a guy that you don’t know what he’s doing. You add another guy like that and it’ll open up the playbook for everyone. Lots of guys likethat in the draft.

I think a lot depends on what kind of offense we roll out. Recent signings point to a more run oriented scheme, but this IS Sean Payton, and clues don't always solve the case with him. There's still the off-chance that due to injuries (God forbid), poor play, or simply Sean wanting to prove a point... that Taysom gets another look as QB1.
If so, our offensive weapon needs change as we won't be all that vertical. We'd be about as west-coast as a team could be, and even our best player (Kamara) may be a little limited by play calling. Like he was last year when Taysom was under center.

With Winston as QB, I'd think our offense would go back to being a lot more vertical than it's been in recent years. But I also expect coach to keep him on a tight leash, especially early on. Thinking back to the 5 games Teddy started. It was obvious that his main directive was to manage the game and not take chances with the ball. So who knows exactly how explosive our offense can be with a play sheet like that. In that case, it would be more on our playmakers to make plays, and that's where I think we have to sort of wait and see. Our roster isn't built with WRs who are a legit threat to take it to the house on any given play.

MT is a sure catch, sure 1st down, and sure extra yardage guy. He physically abuses would-be defenders, but is more known for leaving them bruised and beaten than he is for torching them and leaving them eating dust. TQS strikes me as MT-lite. Physical and daring, but not someone who scares DC's down to down. It's early to judge Calloway, but his game reminds me of early-Snead. More dependable than flashy. Harris now... He has a LOT of big play potential, but his stature worries me every time he gets the ball. He's already missed some time for taking hits that most NFL receivers would be able to brush off. I think we can use him, but it's gotta be limited to 20% like you said.

There's not enough info available to guess where Trautman plays into things, and none of the other WRs or TEs on the roster appear to be big play threats. That makes me think we will add another weapon before the start of the season. If not, I think we'll remain more west coast than vertical for 2021. Now, the other way to look at this is that with Drew's limitations in recent years, our WRs haven't really had a chance to showcase what they can do deep down field. So maybe we already have what we need and just don't know it. I don't think that is the case, but it is possible.

The problem is predictability. Kamara is the only guy on our team that really provides versatility. CGM is really good, but opposing teams know what he will do. Now whether or not they can stop him is a different question...as it's clear that when CGM is healthy and on his game he is incredibly difficult to defend even when opposing defense know how to stop him. You can't have Harris out there much...to valuable to the return game (as seen in the playoffs...that injury was absolutely deflating). I have high hopes for Callaway and he may have a chance to be a well round contributor, but he hasn't shown it at the NFL level. I think that TQS is solid...but he is what he is. He's not a guy that defenses are afraid of...and does most of his damage when opposing defenses simply forget about him. Trautman is likely going to be pretty solid...especially in the redzone, but I wouldn't say that he's a matchup nightmare type of guy.

I really do think that the Saints could benefit by having a well rounded WR that gives opposing defenses a challenge with gameplanning. I honestly don't think that the Saints have that at the WR position right now.

I'm sure that the Saints WANT to run the ball...but in today's NFL, you have to be able to pass. The rules are dictated to allow the team with the best QB play and a good enough defense win. Murray is getting up there in age...he could fall off a bit. Kamara is pretty much tapped out as far as usage and I'd be nervous about pushing that envelope too far...he's just too valuable to get hurt.

Homer-ist or not, I like Terrence Marshall in that role. I see a lot of MT's game in Jamar Chase, and Marshall's game was a perfect compliment to that.

He's a good ball player. Bateman is another guy like that. I think that he could be a very good player as well in our system.
