The Derek Chauvin trial {Mod Edit: Guilty on all charges} (6 Viewers)

If it's you and I speaking, I absolutely agree with you. But people with much more influence and a much louder voice like the President, no, I think it's wholly improper.

Anyway, I'm glad they found him guilty & I hope that he gets the sentence that he deserves. But my biggest hope is that this finally brings some peace in all this turmoil the country has been facing. I think we all can agree on that.

What do you mean by "turmoil the country has been facing"?

Question for sentencing. Will the penalties be concurrent, or consecutive? If he's guilty on all counts, would it be the max of the longest penalty? Is that up to the judge or is it determined by law?

I don't know. I don't think correct verdicts "heal" anything. I think we need to consistently see our justice system, namely cops, being held to a standard that is as fair as today's outcome was. I understand that's by default a pretty tall task, both racially and from a law standpoint, but I guess we will need to see much, much less of killing of unarmed minorities by police which I would assume requires looking at the entire system a completely different way. I don't know. I don't have the answers. That would be my guess.

We have to start somewhere though, right? And I think this is a good step in the right direction.

Why do I get the feeling that if I said the sun was shining outside that someone would challenge me on it?

Seriously, what do you think I mean? What exactly are you implying?

I don't understand what turmoil you're referring to in your post. If I knew what you meant I wouldn't have needed to ask.

I am very happy with the verdict. I hope the sentencing is consecutive and not concurrent. But this speaks to the real nature of where we are as a country regarding race relations where the entire world can watch a white cop over the course of 8-9+ agonizing minutes murder an unarmed black citizen and people were STILL unsure what the verdict would be. It's appalling, concerning, and disconcerting but hopefully this will start some SERIOUS reform and a move in the right direction.

I'm afraid you will be disappointed
Maybe I will be. Maybe I’ll just live a good life and die a happy old man. But when you look at the flip side unless you live the kind of life many dream of the end up in hell there’s no upside to that.

It's justice by the standard of our law. I know it doesn't absolve anything when it comes to the systemic racism in this country, but I hope it can be some sort of milestone to a more just future..The issue is that this will continue to happen, unfortunate as it is, because this kind of behavior is so ingrained in our country.

I'm not trying to be pessimistic. In fact, I think there are certain people who are no doubt heroes for documenting what was happening to George moments before he died. There is an argument to be made that it wouldn't have even made the news had people around this incident not been curious and documented what they saw. I certainly hope we get to the point that we can trust at some level law enforcement to consistently be fair, but until then, I really think that having eyes everywhere may just be the best we can do to prevent these things from happening as much. That and continuing to speak out (not just hold a quiet position of "being against")racism.

Sometimes I think the only way for us to really see some change is to make things socially very uncomfortable until they do. Never violence. But socially, we speak up. And we're loud.

Very well put and I completely agree on all counts.
