What are you reading? (1 Viewer)

I finished reading the Foundation series from Asimov. I had put it down for a while but picked it back up in February and just read like a madman. What a great series. I can see why many stop reading after the ”Second Foundation” but I found “Foundations Edge“ and “Foundation and Earth“ to be highly entertaining.

Now I’m wondering if I should read the Robot series, which ties into the Foundation series. Or perhaps read something from another author.

I typically give myself a break between authors on series like this, perhaps reading one or two other books. You should read the Robot series though.

I've decided to ready the Hyperion series by Dan Simmons.

I was going to start Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth which runs nearly a thousand pages. Then I found out it was a trilogy. Then I found out it had a prequel. I went ahead and read the first chapter of POTE but it didn't grab me. Maybe later.

As a backup, I started The Red King which is second in the series of Star Trek Titan books (10) in which William Riker assumes command of the starship Titan. The great thing about these is that you don't have to read them consecutively which means that I can intersperse them with other reads.

But right now I don't what I'll read afterward but the habit I have developed is a good one and is causing me to watch less and less TV. Hopefully, my guitar habit will stick in the same way. I started private lessons to see if I can get to another level.

I have a copy that I’ve picked up a dozen times. It seems right up my alley but I read about as much as you did. It definitely doesn’t have an early hook.

When I retired (over 2 years ago now) I picked the guitar back up and re-learned a bunch of songs (Rush, LZ, Pink Floyd, Yes) and then with Youtube, learned a bunch of new ones (mostly Steely Dan and Genesis).

While I can still play a bit, the fingers just don't move as well as they use to, I stopped playing every day about a year ago, I need to pick it back up again....stick with it man, guitar playing is really rewarding....

Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. It's not bad, but not a page turner.

I am starting to think I need to revisit some of the classic novels in several genres or visit some that I've never read before.

Just finished book four of Dan Simmon’s Hyperion Cantos series, “Rise of Endymion” There are some things about the series I didn’t care for. I get the tie in with poetry but I found the poems to be a hard read. There were some parts were Simmons seems to drone on a bit about the surroundings and the people in a setting. He’ll make some fairly long lists and I find myself tying to skip ahead. There are also some plot threads that were predictable. The moment Aenea mentioned the “Observers” I knew the A. Bettik had to be one of them.

But these are nit picking over four fairly long books. I say that because I very much enjoyed all four. I keep wondering why the heck these haven’t been made into a movie. Is someone waiting for Simmons to die or something? The 2nd book, “Fall of Hyperion” was my favorite. It had a lot of intrigue and action. The 1st book, “Hyperion” with its short stories from each of the Shrike pilgrams was my 2nd favorite. ”Endymion” being a close 3rd.

Anyways, time to decide on my next reading adventure. When I was younger, I was an insatiable reader. I read three sets of World Book Encyclopedia. Two in Elementary school and one in Jr High. I fell back on my reading over the years with most coming from technical manuals, some occasional science books, and the occasional Star Wars novel. The announcement of the upcoming Dune movie got me to rewatch the original movie and then dive into all of Herbert’s Dune novels. That led me to the Foundation series and then of course to Hyperion. ‘

Now I’m going to read Thrawn Ascendancy. I’m mostly reading it because I love Timothy Zahn’s work with that character. I already have it on my Kindle app so I want to clear it.

I went through a set of Collier's and a set of World Book.

When my grandfather, Bleu Mom's dad, passed away we counted 7 sets of encyclopedias in his possessions. He subscribed to National Geographic. He was a prolific reader. That was the way he learned because he had to drop out of school when he was in sixth grade and help fend for his family, including 14 brothers and sisters.

Anyone on GoodReads? I don't know why I didn't before, but I just signed up and started logging books.

FYI...the military has a really good virtual library where you can find just about any book or audiobook. You do occasionally have to go in queue for some titles, but it’s pretty awesome.

I totally forgot about magazines. My Grandpa has TONS of Nat Geo and Popular Mechanics magazines. I read every one of them. I had all sorts of magazine subscriptions until the internet finally got me to give them all up.
