Dude, I don't care. All I said was I liked the way he played in college. I don't watch Notre Dame football, I don't watch tapes of players on youtube like some lunatic because I'm not a professional scout. I thought Book would be selected by NOLA in the 6th round. I don't think he'll be a starter. I know there were glaring needs well beyond a third string QB. You're patrolling this thread looking to validate your opinions on this kid. Like, what, when you're proven right Ian Book will never be a starting QB in the NFL, that'll prove...? Go away.
You don't have the right to make me go away.

Who died and made you Andrus.

Nowhere in the terms of service does it say I have to be positive about every pick or even unrealistic about their lack of promise.

No one is forcing you to respond to me.

It's not like I Come here to see your posts like St. Widge or Ellias Williams.

Get over yourself, bud.

As for Ian Book, I like it but not ready to say I love it. I watched him play several games and I liked how he carries himself. He played with a lot of confidence and he's athletic enough. The step up to the NFL is a big one, but if he gets a lot of reps and works hard, I think he'll be a solid backup, and potential starter in a year or two.

Man all I'm saying and most people are saying (99% of experts) is even if you want this guy you don't take him in round 4.

I I think that is a reasonable position to hold.
People on TV are not experts working in the field. They are commentators offering opinions. When they are wrong they come back next year and offer more opinions about more prospects.

NFL coaches and GMs lose their jobs when their evaluations are bad too often. Saints have a roster that has won 49 games the last 4 years and players drafted and signed as UDFAs during that 4 year span make up the bulk of the roster.

Maybe Saints brain trust is better at evaluating talent than commentators?

He was also injured, which had a lot to do with that as well.
And was horribly misused in college. Usually you assume that a coaching staff will utilize good players...it didn't make sense...but Butch Davis didn't. Similar story to Antonio Gibson.

That is reasonable. But you are comparing this to the Sullivan pick and saying it's a back breaker. As Reb said above, I enjoy your draft deep dives and your opinions on players, but take a deep breath. Book may end up being a total failure (or he could be okay), but it's not going to destroy the team or break it's back. At worst we missed out on a low percentage chance that we find a starter this year. There are still picks to go and UDFA that could fill that spot. Not to mention lots of cheap veteran free agents on the market in a year when the cap dropped significantly and left many teams with less money than they thought they had.

I mean, all it takes is hitting on a player in the 6th, 7th, or UDFA and the 4th becomes irrelevant. And they probably have just as good of a chance, hitting the right guy there as in the 4th.

Kiper said he thinks he is a career backup that while not great can keep you going for 3 or 4 games when your starter is injured. He also said that he thought he would have gone a little lower.

That's not him saying he thinks the pick stinks. On the other hand, the other two guys on ESPN seemed to really like the pick and thought that he was a perfect fit for our offense.

I'm personally not in love with the pick, but it's a late 4th round pick so meh and I'm fine if Payton like him and feels he is a good fit.
Kiper told the world something similar 20 years ago about a guy named Brady. Not saying Book will be the savior, but what Kiper says....

For starter, the two guys not named Mel Kiper on the ESPN broadcast.

Edit: I think it's McShay and Riddick.
I'd be surprised if it was Mcshay.

Then again he was the one driving the Jamarcus Russell hype train in 2007.

I was checking ESPN.

I didn't see his name anywhere for 4th round best available.

What Hyperbole?

No draft board had him that high.

Period.

So what? The hyperbole is you calling this a back-breaker and comparing it to the Sullivan trade. Most people in this thread aren't really Ian Book supporters. I personally wanted a TE or WR in the spot. I wasn't excited when I saw Books name. But it's a low-risk, late-round pick. You and media thought he could be had in the 6th. Front offices are dialed into what's going on around the league and if they took him there then it's because they knew he wouldn't be there with their 6th round pick and we don't have a 5th. A reach? Sure, I'll succumb to that. But a reach in the 4th isn't going to alter a franchise. That can't be argued.

Kiper told the world something similar 20 years ago about a guy named Brady. Not saying Book will be the savior, but what Kiper says....

“I think he’ll have a Seneca Wallace-type career where you can bring him off the bench and he’ll add a spark.” - Kiper on Russell Wilson after the Seahawks drafted him

"Just an average fifth-round pick, in my opinion.” - Kiper on Richard Sherman

"I’ll see you at his Hall of Fame induction.” - Kiper on Mike Williams

“Three years from now you could certainly be looking at one of the elite, top-five NFL quarterbacks. Look out, because the skill-level he has is certainly John Elway-like.” - Kiper on JaMarcus Russell

What major draft board?

It was McShay and Riddick that disagreed with Kiper and thought he was a good fit in the Saints system. They both felt that the was a timing QB which is perfect for what we do and that he is very good moving around the pocket to buy time (actually part of what made Brees great). However, they did note that he sometimes gets inaccurate and could use more arm strength. But, even Kiper thought that he would be a good backup QB. He just thought he went a little early.
