“I think he’ll have a Seneca Wallace-type career where you can bring him off the bench and he’ll add a spark.” - Kiper on Russell Wilson after the Seahawks drafted him

"Just an average fifth-round pick, in my opinion.” - Kiper on Richard Sherman

"I’ll see you at his Hall of Fame induction.” - Kiper on Mike Williams

“Three years from now you could certainly be looking at one of the elite, top-five NFL quarterbacks. Look out, because the skill-level he has is certainly John Elway-like.” - Kiper on JaMarcus Russell
Oof. Don't forget his Jimmy Clausen take, too!

Get over yourself, bud.

With all due respect (and IMO you are due a lot) you need to take your own advice and back away. You have spoke your peace, others have spoke theirs and IMO this discussion is turning aggressive and is becoming a negative for Saints fans and SR.com. I understand you are about to drop the debate is what we come here for bomb on me, but it can get to the point where it goes too far. Trust me, I have seen it. This one feels like it is right up on the "too far" line. I'm smelling mod intervention pretty soon. JMHO.

I'd be surprised if it was Mcshay.

Then again he was the one driving the Jamarcus Russell hype train in 2007.

I was checking ESPN.

I didn't see his name anywhere for 4th round best available.

He was not on the list, but I think they were just using Kiper's list. Anway, I'm not saying he was on anyone's list of best available at that point. But, those lists are subjective and Riddick and McShay both said they really like the fit in the Saints' system. Of course, they could be wrong.

That is reasonable. But you are comparing this to the Sullivan pick and saying it's a back breaker. As Reb said above, I enjoy your draft deep dives and your opinions on players, but take a deep breath. Book may end up being a total failure (or he could be okay), but it's not going to destroy the team or break it's back. At worst we missed out on a low percentage chance that we find a starter this year. There are still picks to go and UDFA that could fill that spot. Not to mention lots of cheap veteran free agents on the market in a year when the cap dropped significantly and left many teams with less money than they thought they had.

I mean, all it takes is hitting on a player in the 6th, 7th, or UDFA and the 4th becomes irrelevant. And they probably have just as good of a chance, hitting the right guy there as in the 4th.
I say back breaker because You and I both know that Taysom and Jameis need help downfield for one and they are already vulnerable up the middle of the defense after losing 3 starters in Kwon, Brown and Rankins.

I Just don't see how you put all that pressure on 6th and 7th round picks when you have guys who could've been 2nd rounders still on the board at positions of need.

It's cool.

I've calmed down.

This is likely my last post in this thread. I'm over it.

I'm finished.

I've said what I had to say.

Thanks and I agree. 👍

part of it was that Kamara was part of perhaps the best RB class in NFL history
To add to that, when Kamara went to Alabama, he was in the same class as Derrick Henry, and the starting running backs that year were TJ Yeldon and Kenyan Drake.

That was one loaded backfield.

You're talking Grayson or Canfield?
It’s getting hard to take your draft scouting seriously while you are getting this emotional and irrational about mid-late round quarterbacks not working out.

Sean Payton has had a ton of success working with and identifying undervalued QB’s.

He’s not batting 1000, but neither is anyone else.

The fact that you are disregarding so many success stories and including misidentifying/not making a star out of Sean Canfield in the SEVENTH round as some kind of huge black mark on his resume is ridiculous.

Admission: I hate the pick too. I remember watching this guy when I caught ND games now and then and thought "this guy probably won't be drafted high" and certainly didn't think the Saints would draft him. There's nothing really that stood out that was overwhelmingly wow-inspiring. He seems right now game-manager-ish which might just fit the bill as a backup.

I think JW will start with TH playing the joker role taking snaps at all sorts of positions. We don't want to lose TH's ability to be a difference maker elsewhere, and I don't know how high the staff is on Trevor Siemian. Anybody catch any Siemian's games? He was underwhelming.

So I'm assuming the backup battle will between Book and Simeian with TH seeing some snaps at QB, TE, RB, STs, etc. etc. TH's value is much higher not just as a full-time QB.

And if Book can be coached up (which if he put up with Kelly's crap, he can withstand SP), he might be a placeholder if JW goes down. To me, it's more like an insurance pick if there are injuries at the QB position.

I also think think the team's draft strategy is to not go for the immediate (alleged) plug-and play players to projects with high ceilings based on consistency who might not contribute much this year, but 2 or 3 yrs down the road with experience and coaching could be solid starters.

One other point: The Saints have been one of the most successful teams drafting despite not having many picks over the years. No team has every one of their draft picks turn into starters or HOF players. It just doesn't happen because it's not an exact science. The Saints have also had an uncanny ability to draft starters from their UDFAs in the post-draft, which tells me they can coach up guys who might not be completely polished coming out of college.

I’ll defend the pick a bit. I’m not an analyst or a draft guru and I’m not even an Irish fan but because I follow the ACC I did watch a lot of their games. To me, the Irish have been a scrappy team that punched above their weight class.

Book was a big reason for their success. He’s the tallied the most wins at one of the most storied programs in college football. He wasn’t surrounded by Heisman candidates and his coach can make boneheaded decisions. He’s athletic and can move in the pocket pretty well. He throws a pretty ball and has good intangibles like leadership and grit.

Obviously he’s not perfect or he would have been a higher pick. I think taking a 4th round chance on a winning QB from a top program is completely understandable. Especially when you consider our circumstances.

As Underhill said until the Saints have found the next QB they have to take chances in finding him. Maybe Book washes out but he has enough intriguing qualities to take a chance on.
