Do your best to put yourself back in that pre-draft mindset.

You have prospects you like and guys you’re not too familiar with, and prospects you’re not keen on...

Then the Saints draft goes like this...

1. Paulson Adebo, CB, Stanford: Adebo was at one time considered among the very best CBs in the entire class. There was also some buzz about him catching traction and entering the end of the 1st round discussion. He was still widely considered a 2nd rounder. Saints grab him at 28, and I don’t think it goes over like the fart in church that Payton Turner did. The top CBs were gone, and with Adebo’s size and skill set, this pick could’ve been more easily justified.

2. Pete Werner, LB, OSU: I personally loved this pick and I think Werner was an excellent pick here. Regardless, he’s at least solid and fills a need.

3. Payton Turner, DE, Houston: Turner would have been regarded as a huge value/steal at this point.

4. Trill Williams, DB, Syracuse: Williams was widely viewed as a versatile DB and Day 3 pick. His Pro Day wasn’t great, but he made a bunch of plays in games... and versatility is lagniappe. Saints double-down at DB.

6. Landon Young, OT, Kentucky: We all knew OL was coming. Saints take a 6th round flier on an experienced LT from the SEC. Some folks woulda been mad, but it would make sense (pre-draft).

7. Stevie Scott, RB, Indiana: Saints take a flier on a physical power RB with a 7th rounder. Watch Scott’s highlight video and you feel even better.

...Then they get Ian Book as an UDFA and fill out the rest of the UDFAs with Kawaan Baker included...

Before any of these past 3 days... I would’ve felt pretty good about that. Just sayin.

I would say Turner in the 2nd and Werner in the 3rd. But agreed.

So this is why people are upset? It's not the aquisition but the round they were aquired in? Splitting hairs because people think they know better than those doing the field work? those who compare notes with other GMs around the league about players, people think the Saints decided they wanted these players when they did and not the fact this is a draft were 32 teams are competing for available players, so if Turner didn't go at 28 and was drafted 36th in the 2nd round he all of a sudden was a good pick? Would he not then been a good pick for another team?

For me it was more about perception and ideas about players going into the draft.
I saw the reactions on the board after each pick... and I thought this might be a solid exercise in putting things into a different lens to view the new players acquired.

Nah that's not why. Its who we drafted and who was still on the board. For instance...

We took Turner in the 1st when Jeremiah Owusu-Koramora (sp?) was still available. Of course hindsight is 50/50 (Shoutout to Cam), but if we were drafting an edge and a LB we could have gotten J.O-K at 28 and Boogie Basham, Ronnie Perkins, or any number of edge players that were rated higher than Perkins and went after we took Werner in the 2nd. We could have gotten 2 better players than the ones we got that would have been more pro-ready.

Turner's ceiling is high, and Werner looks like he'll be a solid player. So we'll see what happens.

I think we all read too many pre-draft player rankings, mock drafts, and give way too much weight to projected round in the various draft profiles. I'd bet a wooden nickel that Loomis, Ireland, Payton, and the gang... nor any other staff/scouting department in the NFL even looks at or reads any of these things. Much less takes them into consideration. We fall head over heals for names we recognize and it's a kick in the guts to see a team like Dallas or Carolina steal the guy you wanted us to draft. But that's all fantasy. Our GM, coach, and staff are just as informed as any other team. And they like these guys better than the other options on the board at the time of the pick.

Very good. I was just saying they drafted out of order but ended up w/ the players they wanted. Guess the biggest thing is guys still have to come in and do their jobs to win a spot.
