Underhill shared how Winston can meet all his incentives (1 Viewer)

Listening to Deuce and Mike D yesterday and they were not sold on Winston starting this year. Deuce said after watching him in camp last year he is going to have to do a lot of work to start for the Saints. They felt we would see a more platoon of QBs more than naming a starter which I guess explains all the 50% bonuses
That’s a weird assessment to make when a lot of Winston praise is about how he finished the year. A lot of people talked about Winston in camp was a work in progress due to the nature of it all.

That’s why I think Winston will have a great season since the int’s will significantly affect incentives for both his playing time and QB rating. The less int’s that Winston throws, the more money he earns by staying on the field and the more games the Saints will win

It may to some extent motivate him to work harder and study more game film, but I don't think he's going to be thinking about that on the field. At least, I hope not. If he's going to be successful, and I think he will, he needs to commit to work hard because he wants to win and loves the game. Huge amounts of money come as a side effect of that. It almost never works if money is the only real motivation. This is as true in the business world as it is in the NFL.

Ummm.. There is... It's called Passer Rating.
Yes a penalty for ints is part of passer rating, but he can more than offset that with a few extra TDs. TDs should not stand alone as a bonus without considering turnovers. It creates a perverse incentive not to protect the ball. Now I suspect he won’t reach many incentives if he doesn’t protect the ball, because he’ll get pulled out. I would still rather give him a goal to stay below on turnovers, since that was his biggest problem.

I don't think there is any QB in the league that takes a penalty in a contract for throwing interceptions.

It's like me asking an employee to dock their pay for every grammatical mistake they have in their performance evaluation.

No one in their right mind would be stupid enough to sign a contract penalizing something that could be out of their control. Look how many tipped balls went for interceptions for Drew Brees.
I said it should be a ratio. Turnovers are just as impactful as TDs, so it should be a ratio to prevent creating a perverse incentive to take unnecessary risks to get those TDs.

To get a 90+ passer rating he'll need like 1:2.7 Int:TD rating.

INT really tanks a Passer Rating. It's why Rodgers excessively throws the ball away or take a bunch of sacks instead of taking risk. It's not out of benefit of the team. Just to protect his stats.

Taking sacks doesn't affect your passer rating.

500k Max for 93 passer rating, while 25TDs gets him 1M. This incentives him to take more risks.

I don't like that there isn't a penalty involved with throwing interceptions or at least make the TD to int ratio the basis of getting money. I would've made the TD bonuses subject to the TD to int ratio, such that he only gets it if he is at 2 to 1 TD to int and then double the incentive if he reaches those with a 3 to 1 ratio, or make it for the ratio of turnovers to include fumbles.
Your boss probably doesn’t like that there isn’t a penalty for you posting nonsense on SSF instead of filling out your TPS reports.

I don’t like that you are [Mod Edit - :nono: Personal and Insulting] enough to think that any NFL player is willing to sign a contract that would penalize them for turnovers or other negative plays that may not always be all their fault. 😛

Do it the math. You can't gas your way to a 93 passer rating. He has to be a Turnover free Passer to make it work. He has had over 25 TDs once in his career. Incentives are suppose to be achieveable not spiteful

Jameis has never been over a 92 rating primarily because of his Int rate. Comp % has been an issue also.

"If Winston plays for 70% of offensive snaps and the Saints rank fifth or better in sacks allowed..."
This one is interesting...

Translation: get rid of the ball.
