There is a group of Borg that patronizes anyone who doesn’t just eat the cheese of every pick, every move the team makes, etc….it’s ridiculous. Any time someone has their own opinion of a player, if it’s not all black and gold glasses, they’re chastised and told how ignorant they are. I’m sure it’s part of every message board for every fan base. And I’ll bet those folks are just as bigoted in real life and with most issues. Sad. Is what it is tho.
I think that probably cuts both ways.

My view is that all opinions are valid, some better supported and argued than others.

What I really dislike is the opinion which cannot be changed. If people aren't open to considering other points of view and willing to have their minds changed, then it's less a discussion where ideas and opinions are shared freely, and even if we don't agree in the end we can understand another's opinion, and becomes instead an endless gloomy-go-round of repeatedly stating opinions which cannot be changed and getting upset when no one else changes their mind about their own opinion.

Some people need to let go of some of their certainty.

I have been on message boards from almost the very beginning. If your goal is to "change people's minds" then you looking to frustrate yourself. You might as well go outside and bang your head against something very hard. The best you can hope for is to "plant a seed" in someone's head that might lead to someone reconsidering their position. Experience has taught me the more ardent the argument, the more people will stand their ground In fact, to continue to argue may actually be counter productive because you made solidify a person's close mindedness. Ideas have to grow in people they have to consider it against hat they already "know" and only then will they consider changing their mind. This is never going to happen in an 'active" debate or discussion.

lastly, there is nothing for certain until after the fact. Everything is based on circumstantial evidence and the law of probability. Plus, everything subjective. (e.g who is the GOAT rest entirely on whatever factor you value most). Debate is fine as long as you understand at the end of the day it is all academic and all subjective. While some fans "over analyzed" and other fans like to close the eyes and keep the faith, it is not productive to impugn either group. We are all free to choose to be fans in our own way.

Completely agree. And just to be clear, I'm not putting conditions on others' way of being fans, or impugning people who are generally positive or those generally negative. I'm saying that it's a better discussion when people are willing to let go of some of their certainty and consider things from a different perspective and, at the very least, try to understand it.

As you say, it doesn't happen very often and a message board engenders cliques and unassailable opinions. However, while I understand this, it doesn't mean I have to like it or participate in that way.

Also, you will agree there's a difference between 'I want to change people's minds' and 'I prefer it when people to come into a discussion willing to have their minds changed'

💯 agree.

I voted "Too soon to tell". Basically I am like that with all players anyway. But with him, he doesn't stand out on video but he does seems to understand the game and react accordingly. But if he turn into at least an AJ Klein type then I am more than happy. We really missed an AJ Klein there last year. Seems to know where and how to line up and dictate plays. Remember the last Ohio State players picked in the second round was Michael Thomas and Vonn Bell. I think those two turn out pretty good, don't you think?
