Saints Do you think Payton Turner has the juice to be a hidden gem 🤔. Lets see (merged) (1 Viewer)

I love how some think we should never draft another athletic DE ever again because, you know, Marcus Davenport. Lol
I agree. Dav did not ask for 2 first round picks to be burned on him. And this kid didn't ask to follow Dav. This staff has found some D line hidden gems. After the shock of not knowing who this kid is relative to the other prospects on the board then, I am willing to cut them some slack on Turner.

Damn near carbon copy of Davenport, even down to the injury history. He’s got longer arms. It’s somethin I guess. Boom or bust in my opinion. He won’t be average.
Longtime posters are turning themselves into trolls with their reaction to this draft class. Two words: relax, breathe 🧘🏽‍♂️

Turner's "knock" is he plays really tall. He IS tall. I was very surprised to see him "muscle" straight through big O-Lineman with that high leverage. The big boys and guards in the league will be a different test for him. If he can get his situational leverage/pad level worked on to be able to fight through the strong, big guys that can use that against him, he could be something to see this year and down the road. Love his tenacity...as with most of our picks. There is a bit of "something" to each of the guys we are bringing in...even with some of the UDFA class. There is a definite method to the FO scouting and I like it.

I'm just surprised after what we have had to endure with Davenport not coming through or being able to even get on the field at times, that we would put a first round pick on the exact same kind of player. Hoping it turns out well. Again.
I see what you’re saying but I think they are slightly different. Turner has more bend and finesse than Davenport. Davenport uses more power.
But even if you think they are the same why not have two guys who have size and can rush the passer instead of one 🤷🏽‍♂️

Davenport had 1.5 sacks and 12 total tackles last year.

Picking up his 5th year option is strictly a function of giving up 2 first rounders to get him, not his performance to date.

I don't know how he will turn out. I don't know anything about him. In fact I don't know most of the players drafted by the NFL. I will admit this year, I haven't really follow college football and the only players I know of is the one on national tv.

With that being said, I was a little disappointed with the pick. Of course not fair to him or the team. Not hearing some big names did put a downer. However, listening to him speak, he seems very happy and eager to be picked and ready to work. I watched a few interviews after the draft and some before the draft on you tube and I came away impress with his attitude. He is raw and but he has a lot of growth. He is willing to learn and willing to figure ways to get better. He looks like an outgoing guy. The local media will enjoy interviewing him, seeing how he is a very likable person.

Davenport and Turner do seems to look comparable, seeing how big these guys are. Davenport is a freak of an athlete but he seems to have a different demeanor than Turner.

Everyone knows our pass rush was much more effective when Davenport was in the game compared to when he was out. Yeah he had a year that didn’t meet expectations but he was still a force out there. With more playing time he should have more production this year.

I hope Turner turns out a HELL of a lot better than Davenport. Yall do realize that we let Hendrickson walk and he had 13.5 sacks, Cam had 7.5 and the waste of a pick Davenport had 1.5?? If Turner is equal together they'll get to 3 sacks... awesome. Seriously, I'm pulling for him but he better be much better than Davenport to justify the pick.
You do realize there's no way we could've offered Hendrickson a contract anywhere close to the one he signed with the Bengals, yes?

You must've forgotten that Davenport was dealing with a lingering lisfranc injury. That's tough for a pass rusher. He definitely lost a step, but he still had a very high pressure rate and pass rush win rate, and our defensive line as a whole took a huge step forward when he returned to the lineup. His 5th year option had nothing to do with what we gave to acquire him. He's a really good player, still with potential to be elite. He just needs some luck with staying healthy.

I didn't notice it being much more effective with Davenport. Have you tracked the stats with and without him?

yeah our def got a lot better around the time dav returned.
Sack numbers aren't everything.
He certainly contributes and i dont think his draft cost has anything to do with his option being picked up.

That being said, it would be nice if dav can take another step forward this year. He is a tantalizing player.

Im pumped to see turner out there.
