Thoughts about our draft picks after a week? (1 Viewer)

What is everyone thoughts about the draft and our picks after one week? I know some of you have gone to you tube and did some research. After watching some games footages and videos and listening to the interviews, I feel a little better about it. Last week I gave it a C. Now I am leaning toward a B-. My grade is not the players but the value of the picks. Maybe we could of gotten these players a little later. Or maybe there were better talents when we picked.

Reasons for my lukewarm attitude toward this draft was because my lack of knowledge of any of these players. Due to a very unusual year for college football and its players, I didn't follow the game closely. A lot of players opted out and there wasn't an NFL combine. All in all, no matter where or what slot any players were picked, no one knows how they will turn out. That goes for any team.

Address all the needs. Got the best players for their draft position. They where aggressive and tried to trade up, but it didn't work out. They trusted their board and that's the best you can ask for at 28th.

The truth is that a sure fire great 1st round starter at 28th is just historically pretty spotty.

Internet websites do mock drafts in order to pay the bills. Armchair QB’s pay attention to sportswriters and form opinions accordingly.
Jeff Ireland has a pretty good track record, so for me, I’ll defer any criticism for at least 2 years on the incoming rookie class. I also expect it to be a productive one.

We do this every year where we have our favorite players we want the Saints to pick and like clockwork it goes a totally different direction and we have a 12-4 season

We are fans of this team and organization and I for one am never bummed about a draft because the players always make sense when compared to the current roster so I'm just as excited about these additions than any other draft.

I feel the same I did the days of the draft. I like all the picks and I especially like HOW and WHY they scouted/graded and chose the players. All fit a certain style, mindset and all have certain "something" to their football DNA that they are looking to exploit or have a "vision" for. No kneejerk on pure athleticism, prototype fillers or "hope for the best" guys. Even our UDFA's seem to be fitting that same mold. I am more excited about this draft and the prospects than past years with "sexier" picks.

I remain skeptical of this draft. A principal reason was that we were drafting 28th in a mediocre draft. For the first time in years, our selections were need-driven. And this was the worst defensive draft I can remember, and of course, we focused on defense.

Our drafting overall has not been terribly good since 2017. Our 2016 draft was exytemely good. Our 2017 draft was sensational. But overall since then?

I don't think anyone knows or claim they are a scout of any kind. This is just an opinion from a fan perspective. We all have one. Whether anyone like or hate the picks is irrelevant. The success of these player and the team lie solely on the coaches.

And you are right, it will takes a year or two to really know what these players are. What is unfair to these rookies are that the fact that we put the 2017 draft class on this big pedestal and every draft class needs to measure up to that class or it is failure. But people needs to remember that class didn't start out that great either. Faith and chances and of course talent got them to where they are at. I remember we started 0 and 2 that year coming off two lost in the beginning against Minnesota and New England. The thinking of going 7 and 9 season again. Didn't look good when we had to travel to Carolina the week three going against a 2 and 0 Carolina team. Petersen got benched and Kamara took over. Against Miami, Strief got injured and Ram had to take over. Trey Henderickson got hurt and didn't get his chances until year 3. Anzalone got hurt his rookie year. Imagine if Petersen played well or Strief didn't get hurt? Those players wouldn't have the success early on or maybe wouldn't be as successful as they are now. Who knows.

Since then we have already establish starters and players coming after them will have to sit on the benched or be cut. So it isn't fair for a lot of players or say the drafts after 2017 were complete failure. Many players were never given a fair chance to compete. Starters are already set.

It feels refreshing, because it feels like the team went back to the 2016/2017 style of drafting instead of us treating it like a garage sale in 2018-2020 because the team was deep and loaded.

I still like it, high IQ, high motor guys with high athleticism. Should be a recipe for success but you never really know

Honestly...there was nobody there that I loved. Turner has potential...but it would have been nice to trade down. That would have made it much more palatable. I’m meh on the OSU LB. My concern is that not many OSU fans thought that Werner was that good. Most though that he was the 2nd-3rd best LB on the team. After that I don’t care as much because the hit rate on players after round 2 isn’t great.

Same as before, during and right after - I trust the coaches and scouting department more than my own judgement but the draft is always a crapshoot.
