I just have to keep trying to show this (1 Viewer)

the 70s were the greatest Era of music. The greatest musicians came from it. We have all heard about eddie van halen but he's not even the best. Robert Fripp is as a guitarist. The best drummer of all time is Bill Bruford from YES and King Crimson. The best bassist of all time was Charles Mingus, oops, Jaco Pastorius (forgot we're sticking to rock for a moment). The best song writer was Tom Waits. Deep Purple probably had the best hard rock song with Smoke on the Water, but the greatest hard rock band was The Who. Soft rock was easily America....in southern rock its the Allman Brothers. Then comes psychedelic rock with Jimi Hendrix.
fify since your phone had misspelled all the right answers. :hihi:
Peart may be the most technically gifted, but when it comes to changing music, it's Keith Moon.
Fify. Even Bonham's own son said Moon was the most influential drummer and the one he emulated.

My personal "best" or favorite drummer is Neil Peart. I love a lot of different drummers from damn near every genre of music, but Peart was the first one to make me stop and ask, "How TF does he do THAT?" But his idol was Keith Moon, so I don't know.

Bonham is my second personal "best" because his grooves were just nasty.

Zigaboo Modeliste is my 3rd "best."

I just have to keep trying to show this

Why? Why do you have to keep trying? What was wrong with "showing this" in any of your other recent music threads?

I don't necessarily disagree with your assessment, but geez, give it a rest!!

Zep pound-for-pound may have had the strongest rock band line-up of all time:

Guitar -- Jimmy Page, difficult to say he's not among the top 10 lead guitarists. (Rolling Stone, #3)

Drums -- Bonham, maybe the best ever, although Moon and Peart will have their backers. No way he's not in the top five. (Rolling Stone, #1)

Lead singer -- Plant, for his range, power and delivery, often no. 1 on lists, although Freddie Mercury pops up there, too. In the greatest singers PERIOD list you get a tremendous amount of soul and R&B artists, and Elvis, of course, but I am talking about lead singer (Rolling Stone, #13, but among rock bands behind only McCartney, Lennon and Dylan, and honestly IMO none of those guys has Plant's singing chops. And he was no. 1 in the fan poll FWIW).

Bass -- RS has John Paul Jones at #13, behind only McCartney, Entwhistle and Jack Bruce, although I'd have Chris Squire ahead of the them all. Suffice to say he's holding his own here.

Thoughts welcome.

Rap is a style of lyrical delivery, hip hop is a genre of music.

You can have rap without hip hop as the rap rock bands of the late 90s unfortunately showed us. You can also have hip hop without rap. But people just conflate the two as a lot of hip hop features rap and vice versa.
I can't stand neither one , stupid music stupid lyrics

the 70s were the greatest Era of music. The greatest musicians came from it. We have all heard about eddie van halen but he's not even the best. Steven Vai is as a guitarist. The best drummer of all time is neil peart from rush. The best bassist of all time was Billy Sheehan. The best song writer was tommy shaw. Nugent probably had the best hard rock song with stranglehold, but the greatest hard rock band was acdc. Soft rock was easily styx. Probably followed by journey, reo, Kansas with songs like hold on and carry on my wayward son, and foreigner (sp my phone keeps changing it).. in southern rock its skynyrd, then bad company, the Allman brothers. Then comes psychedelic rock with pink floyd.

I could go into so much more like the eagles, the doobie brothers, def leopard, bon jovi, three dog night, Santana, skid row, ratt (for 2 albums), judas priest, iron maiden, Metallica, and so many hair bands, scorpions, white snake, damn Yankees, gamma, and so many other great bands of that Era. Zz top. So many other great bands of that time.

I could go into the best love song music like barry white, barry manilow, lionel richie, kenny rogers, cliff richards, David pomeranz, the Manhatens, and so many other great song writers like Chicago.

Most of you aren't old enough to know that great era of music. I haven't even talked about the greatest voices of all time like Karen carpenter, olivia newton john, elvis, Paul rogers, Dennis de young, neil diamond, Barbara Streisand, steely dan....

Most of you have never even listened to this music. I know I'm old fashioned. No one will ever convince me that there is better music than that Era. I just wish people could discover songs like t is for Texas, sign of the southern cross, long train running, blaze of glory, don't you tread on me, pieces of april, gimme three steps, shine on you crazy diamonds, 18 and life, a wanted man, blue collar man, renegade, feel like making love, bohemian rhapsody, faithfully, China Grove, hotel California, lying eyes, strangle hold, enter sandman, sign of the southern cross, heaven and hell, comfortably numb, and so many other great songs from that Era.
I agree with you , the music , singers , bands were all pretty good , right now as for as I'm concerned there is no more Rock & Roll music or good Country music , it's all gone !! That era of great music is gone and has been for awhile , hell at least back then you could understand the lyrics , maybe even sing along . This stuff they have now is NOT Rock & Roll or Country music !! You are right Dave don't let anyone tell you different !

Yeah, I'd consider Rap an offshoot of Hip Hop. it's one hip hop element, but not the only.

"
And my whole crew is loungin'
Celebratin' every day, no more public housin'
Thinkin' back on my one-room shack
Now my mom pimps a Ac' with minks on her back
And she loves to show me off of course
Smiles every time my face is up in The Source
We used to fuss when the landlord dissed us
No heat, wonder why Christmas missed us
Birthdays was the worst days
Now we sip Champagne when we thirsty
Uh, damn right, I like the life I live
'Cause I went from negative to positive"

'Stupid' is a poor word choice because it is a value judgment more than just a personal opinion - but I can see how some people find a lot of rap/hip-hop lyrics to sound 'stupid', meaning that they are about base or crass ideas and don't have anything particularly intellectual going on. I think the exact same can be said about a lot of pop and country lyrics. The mainstream stuff on the radio and in the charts is almost always that way (though not always, there are plenty of exceptions).

But like all genres, there is some really intellectual hip-hop out there. The whole "underground" scene (mid-late 90s into the 00s) was founded on thoughtful lyrics detailing the artist's accounts of trying to understand life and the things going on around them. I think that movement made many in the next generation of rappers much more thoughtful, introspective in their lyrics. There are household names (Kanye, Kendrick Lamar, etc.) who have some pretty deep, heady content in their lyrics. The whole sound or presentation may not appeal to everyone, but it certainly isn't 'stupid' by any measure.

Rock and roll (or i should say true rock and roll, which includes it all) spans all the years. Yes, it gets no better than the 70s, but that leaves a lot out. I can name so many great bands. Yes I always talk about the 70s, and it all stems from that Era. Even the hair bands get their basis from that Era. Heavy metal basically started from acdc and sabbath. Same with Metallica. Skynyrd started all the southern rock genre, though free or bad company could get a reprieve on that. I grew up in that Era. Granted, I'm not good with words in expressing myself. I try but I fail short. I know rock and roll and have a true passion for it.

I have left out so many great bands. Ambrosia comes to mind, just as ccr, the doors, johnny cash, survivor, loverboy, and I could name so many more. 70s was the best. No doubt there. Rock and roll died after the mid 90s after kenny Wayne Sheppard and damn Yankees ended their runs. There has really been no rock and roll since then.

"Rock and roll died after the mid 90's....." Same time Kurt died.

The best drummer of all time would be John Bonham and the best bassist would be Michael Peter Balzary, better known as Flea....Giving Kris Novoselic a quick salute as well. Best rock drummer would be David Grohl. As far as best guitarist, going with Kurt Cobain (I know it's not popular vote), but would also give credit to Tom Morello, the guitarist from Rage Against the Machine, he had a sound all his own.

There is a lot of great music from different era's, but thanks for pointing the spotlight on the 70's. It definitely made me think a little bit. I have a new found respect for the 70's, but am partial to the sounds of late 80's and early 90's. I have great respect for musicians in different generations though.

This is thread number 3, that pretty much says, the same thing. Do you think your point was made, or do you think, if you do the same thing over and over, a different result will happen?

Gee, I wonder who your favorite band is?

I was tempted to say Nirvana until I saw he misspelled Krist Novoselic's name as "Kris". I don't think a hardcore Nirvana fan would do that.
