Grease (1 Viewer)

But the question you’re all wondering is: IS IT A CHICK FLICK ?? The answer is: Only if you consider all musicals, by definition, chick flicks... I think the answer is No, but it really hinges on that question..... Also, sorry DR- but Worse Things I Could Do is probably my least favorite song in the whole film.. pretty much all the rest of them are great though.
no, not a chick flick - she only pretends to change for him - Danny is the one who has the character arc

Worst Things is the best song - 2 reasons
1. it's the best character moment, revealing a depth of character no one else gets
2. it's the best stand alone - the other songs are made better by their inclusion in the show. i would hazard a guess that Worst Things is the song most cabaret singers pull from the show

Finally, a David Robbins post i can get on board with... Not only is Grease the greatest musical ever filmed, it is also a Top Ten[tm] movie of all time... In addition, it is the first movie that yours truly ever saw in a movie theater.. i remember it like it was last month ; I couldn’t tell you a thing that happened on the screen, but i can remember the energy it had, and I remember walking out of the movie theater so happy and euphoric, becuase of what I’d just seen... the movie has a kind of magic to it.
you'll have to define 'greatest musical ever filmed'
if you mean best adaptation of a stage musical, that's Chicago

this is probably the greatest musical I have ever seen. Olivia was at the top of her game back then. But let's explore this. What was the best song in that movie. We all know hopelessly devoted. And summer loving. But what about there are worst things I could do. Or frankie avalon with his angel bit. This was probably the greatest musical of all time. I had such a huge crush on olivia back then. But that movie was one of the greatest of all time. Stockard channing did a song called there are worst things I could do. Oh my God that was such a great movie. What was your favorite song in that movie if you saw it.
i would have left it alone with 'greatest musical i have ever seen'
when you shift to 'greatest of all time' i feel provoked
[[ and since you brought family bona fides into the discussion - i grew up in the theatre (both of my parents are actors), My sister left NOCCA and immediately went to NYC where she got tons of domestic and international touring creds eventually landing 4 Broadway credits (one original, 3 revivals) and she transitioned to Stage Manager and has called about 7 bway shows. my BiL has tons of B'way credits as well as well as several asst director credits, and is now the intl touring director of Kinky Boots. It should also be noted that i am not a musicals fan boi - i am 'meh' on the genre - i like to think when i respond to a show, i do so in reference to the sum of its parts and not being swept away by overall 'Musicalness']]

all that being caveated - i challenge you to find one aspect of Grease that is better than it's analogue in West Side Story (to be clear, I don't think WSS is the best, but pound for pound, it's hard to beat, and I know Grease can't match it in any particular category

Now THAT is a sizzling hot take ! Good job

Meh, i think it’s just the old PP (personal preference).. IMO Worse Things is just a weak song, despite however many cabaret singers like to perform it... Also, I’m not sure how you can say that it’s the best stand alone song , since Hopelessly Devoted was a bonafide radio hit (as was the title song Grease (Is The Word)) and definitely stands on it’s own , movie or no movie.

Finally, just in a general sense- in your posts in this thread, you seem to be conflating the stage musical Grease with the movie musical Grease .. ive never seen the stage show, but from what i understand, it’s very diffferent than the movie.. matter of fact i remember reading that some of the best songs in the movie version were written specifically for the film, and never appeared in the stage version- i think two were Hopelessly Devoted and Summer Nights, though not sure on the last one... So maybe your opinion of the stage version is bleeding over? Funny enough, my favorite stage musical of all time is A Chorus Line, which , compared to the movie version- is like an entirely different thing.
