I can agree with Olivia Newton-John. Always though she had talent. Even as a kid, I was wondering why are people so big on Madonna, when Olivia is the gifted one?!?! Just my take on the matter.

Good luck with your crusades, because everyone is pretty much set in their ways.

Lol, I loved ONJ, but, Madonna was and still is incredibly gifted. She's the greatest female pop star of her generation. And she's stuck to it longer than most. I would take Madonna's music over ONJ just about every time. And I'm not even a huge Madonna fan.

I admit Madonna has good songs, and her personality is one of a kind. She started off as a punk rock band.

Are yall kidding. Maradona. Olivia, Karen carpenter, Barbara Streisand, and so many others blew her away.

That's not right. Yes I might be gone responding for a time while I view what people are saying, but my main goal is to wait and see what everyone has to say. I have studied music for all my life. I play many instruments. True. I am not the best with words. But I know music. I have given you all the best bands of all time. I know that there might be some i don't know. But you can't beat any of the bands i have named. But this thread is about musicals. We've acknowledged grease is the best. But what about eddie and the cruisers. I could steer this conversation in many ways. However, I can't make anyone believe what I believe. I could bring up great movies like star wars compared to star trek or Battlestar Galactica , or other such comparisons. It all comes down to opinions.

Let me give one more example. Have you seen the movie jazz singer. Neil diamond is one of the best song writers and singers of all time. Perhaps his greatest song was love on the rocks. Look it up on YouTube. Lucy Arnaz, the daughter of Lucille ball was in it. I could bring up so much more. I have studied music for so long. As I have said i used to play many instruments but can't anymore. But, I love music. Real music. Bash me if you want to, but understand that I know what I am talking about.

There were so many great songs, musicals, and bands, how can anyone name them all. I don't know everything. But I do know the best. I have studied and listened to them all. I have almost 58 years to be knowledgeable on this subject. There are so many directions this topic could go in. Music is, and will always be what people enjoy. That's just the God's honest truth. I could say that skynyrd is the best band of all time, but you might say that styx is. Or acdc. Or the eagles. Or some modern band. It comes down to opinion.

I respect everyone's opinion on this board and I never bash anyone, even when they disagree with me. That's the reason I start these threads. I truly just want to know what others think about what's on my mind at the time. Lol. But my main love in this life is music, except for of course Jesus, and I love to talk about it.
A thing or 2
I explained how Grease is not the greatest musical (maybe not even top 20)
I asked you to demonstrate in any way how Grease is better than West Side Story in terms of music, dance, story, acting
If you’re going to throw around superlatives, then please defend your proclamations

2. a ballerina can spend their life perfecting their craft - can rise to the rank of Prima — that does not automatically mean they know much about dance history or choreography or teaching
Technical ability and cultural appreciation are not shared skills (sure, there may be overlap but someone who’s never danced a lick might be a better cultural arbiter than a prima ballerina)

What’s in Olivia Newton’s John?

If this is gonna turn into a Madonna vs Olivia Newton John thread, then i dont even wanna live anymore... ONJ has more talent in her Australian left pinky finger than that hack Madonna could ever dream of having in the entirety of her botoxed body...... Madonna was the best marketer and self-promoter the world has ever seen, seriously no one can compare.. but ONJ’s angel voice ranks with, as DR said, the likes of Carpenter, Streisand, Ripperton and any other sublime female you can think of.

if you're bringing Minnie Ripperton into this then it;'s game over - that voice was amazing

but check that Dave said 'entertainer' - until Beyonce claimed the spot, none were better than Madonna at making herself the product and creating an entertainment juggernaut out of it. and to acknowledge that Madonna was the least talented of the group, it makes her ascent much more impressive
sure, like Michael Jackson, she was forging a brand new Mtv path with little opposition or resistance, but she did it basically on gumption

now to get back to another Dave thing, many that came after Madonna took a 'product first' approach - Lady Gaga, Janelle Monae, Sia, maybe even Brittany, et al - and the assumption now is that since Madonna was not talented and leaned on gimmick then anyone who has a gimmick is probably not talented. which is seldom the case

I agree with you, i think we‘re quibbling over semantics.. yes Madonna’s ’ascent’ is all the more impressive b/c she did the most, with the least, of any entertainer in history.. most of the others you mentioned were/are huge talents who worked hard to become iconic- whereas Madonna Ciccone was never the best singer, nor the best dancer, nor the best actress, nor the best looking.. she was adequate in all those areas, but all of those qualities were insignificant compared to the gargantuan size of her ambition.. all you have to do is go to uTube and find the interview from Amer Bandstand where she told that cheap SOB Dick Clark that her goal was to “rule the world.”

I recently watched Rock of Ages and thought it was a pretty decent musical. If you like 80s music.

Which is why I focused on entertainer. What's unquestioned is that she was a trend-setter and it's hard to nail down what she does specifically that makes her great, but she pulled it all together. And honest question, those other great singers, have they had anywhere near the phenomenal success Madonna has had for the length of time she's had? I can't think of any other than maybe Lady Gaga, Beyonce and probably Taylor Swift. Madonna in a lot of ways, blazed the trail for them.

I really like a lot of Madonna's music. They're not the best songs on my playlists but I still enjoy them. Crazy For You, True Blue, Live To Tell, I'll Remember, Take a Bow are all solid songs imo.

It's all subjective though. I enjoy Madonna’s music, and while they may not be among the greats, it's safe to say she's a self made superstar in a lot of ways. Kudos to her for pulling that off.

I will offer that you might not be aware of how huge Beyoncé’s celebrity has grown
Both she and Taylor Swift have vastly outgrown the shadow Madonna cast, but for Beyoncé- it’s like her husband once said “I’m not a businessman; I’m a business, man” - she’s an industry unto herself
