MoviePass ($10 a month for in-theater movies) (1 Viewer)

I recall them saying that the Dr that was removed from the flight a while back used a 3rd party. The airline used that as a determining factor when they couldn't get any takers for the free flight vouchers. Not saying it happens a lot, but it seems to be a possibility. I don't have a problem with that, but feel like people should understand that going in so that they aren't outraged later.

I wasn’t aware of that. Good point perhaps I’ve just been lucky?

Hotels are a bit different in that once you check in you're good afaik. So if you aren't doing a later arrival, it's easy to be lucky. Flights, not so much. I'd guess it has more to do with the demand for the route you need.

I've heard that using 3rd party for booking can result in you being left out if there is an overbooking. Is that the only drawback?

Not usually a problem for me because I like to get there early most times so some other sucka gonna be roofless for an evenin.
Nope, Ive had a hotel get overbooked twice out of hundreds with priceline, both times they found me a better room and refunded me.

Ive had hotels give my room away after booking direct with nothing but a sorry.

Airlines have caught up to Priceline and offer the same prices direct with the perks. Hotels are still 25-50% less with priceline.

Hotels too - if they’re overbooked or have some other issue, there’s a priority list and third-party bookings have lower priority (get bumped quicker) than direct bookings. But I think you can offset that by being in their membership club, that will at least give you priority over non-members who have also third-party booked.

I travel quite a bit and never use third-party booking for air, car, or hotels. But either way, I always join the membership club even if it’s my first time with that particular vendor.

The more I read about this the more I feel my wife and I always get lucky or have been lucky. We always use third party for hotels. Never a single problem. (In the US) The one time we did have a problem was at a resort in ?? but that was direct booked. Was also resolved with an upgrade. My wife does make sure we are a member everywhere though so maybe that’s it.

I have quite literally stayed at over a thousand hotels booked through 3rd party with so few hassles. Probably saved close to $40k in the process. I have IGH and Marriot programs but happily give up the points for the money saved. The IGH membership is great for the 2pm checkout. Marrriot and Hilton have great reward programs but the room rates are so high they arent worth it beyond the check in perks.

Flights arent any cheaper through 3rd party with the exception of Express deals but the savings are usually pretty minimal and not even close to worth the hassle of guessing when a flight will leave, number of stops and playing the airline lotto. Plus the airline miles have more value to me than hotels because I can get hotels so cheap 3rd party. The exception to this is peak season in tourist areas which I try to avoid anyway. Also, the lack of ability to prebook a handicap accessible room 3rd party when traveling with my mother who is in a wheelchair is lame.

I'm closing in on a million airline miles banked. Will use those for international travel to max their value. Im eyeing trips to Argentina, Southeast Asia and Australia. I can use my chase points to book some really insane hotel rooms to maximize the value of those. :)

We use Hilton rewards and family that works there gets us a discount if we choose a Hilton.
Man you are well traveled indeed! Enjoy those miles and those trips you’re eyeing!

I don’t usually see a price disparity - I use the third party sites for research but then book direct. It’s usually the same price or within a couple of bucks. But bclemms travels more than I do for sure.

.....Not all of these are entirely new to those of us who have followed the MoviePass saga closely, but they do paint a chilling picture beyond the ritzy mountainside party villas and MoviePass-branded pillows. For one thing, we heard back in 2019 that MoviePass had purposefully invalidated the passwords of some “power users” to stop them from seeing too many movies and that it had instituted secret “trip wires” that would effectively shut down everyone’s access to the service once a certain number of tickets had been bought to keep the company from bleeding the cash (or at least bleeding through more cash than it did on any other day).

According to the FTC complaint, though, the password thing may have happened to as many as 75,000 users, and Mashable says “many” of them were fully locked out of their accounts because even the MoviePass password reset system was a disaster. Basically, MoviePass’ definition of a “power user” who was using the service too much applied to nearly 100,000 of them, but that’s also not totally accurate because MoviePass believed that every user was using the service too much............

I'll say this. Thanks to MoviePass (which I benefited from and got out in time on), it forced Regal and AMC to (wisely) offer their own package. I had intended to take up the Regal option last year (for me I have two theatres within 1 mile of my home for $18/mo), and plan to soon.
