COVID-19 Outbreak Information Updates (Reboot) [over 150.000,000 US cases (est.), 6,422,520 US hospitilizations, 1,148,691 US deaths.] (5 Viewers)

While 88% effectiveness after 2 doses of the Pfizer vax is still really good to protect against symptomatic disease, it drops down to 33% for those who only have gotten the 1st dose...

I keep hearing this narrative that the lag in Vaccines doses is due to the Anti-vax / Evangelical / Rural / Mostly Caucasian demographic...

But I keep reading that it's actually the opposite demographics that are not getting vaccinated (for whatever) reasons...

I have no point here - I am just posting what I am reading, and how it's not matching up with the overall narrative of why vaccine rates are lacking.

That has to be compared to nation-wide percentages of racial identification (July 2019 US Census estimates). Note that the census treats Hispanic identity as a separate thing from race:

76.3% - White alone, percent
13.4% - Black or African American alone, percent
1.3% - American Indian and Alaska Native alone, percent
5.9% - Asian alone, percent
0.2% - Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone, percent

2.8% - Two or More Races, percent

18.5% - Hispanic or Latino, percent
60.1% - White alone, not Hispanic or Latino, percent

My assumption is that these are compared to population percentages (maybe a bad assumption), and the numbers I posted are being reported (confirmed) in more local and specific areas as well... If I am being honest, it was unexpected.... Based on all the social media feeds, you'd think it was strictly the rural-suburban , Caucasian, Baby Boomer, Anti-Vax / conspiracy mongering people driving down the vax percentages... but actual numbers are saying it's the opposite....

Even here in NOLA:

So far, vaccines protect against the current variants. Older adults have high vaccination rates which is keeping them out of the hospital, but African-Americans have fewer numbers vaccinated, so they are getting sick and going to the hospital in higher numbers.

“Since widespread vaccinations though, what we're seeing now is the people who are getting COVID are almost exclusively our black residents,” City Health Director Dr. Jennifer Avegno told the City Council.

There is the same problem with young adults who are not getting the shot.

They were talking about it on NPR here in the PNW. Minorities, blacks especially, have a deeply-held distrust of government healthcare efforts. It's not without good reason. (Looking at you, Tuskegee)

For those of you who have gotten covid are any of you guys experiencing a changed sense of smell?

It's been 7 months since I've gotten it and coffee and hand sanitizers still smell different than pre covid for me. The coffee tastes the same but the smell is just, I can't even describe it because it's a smell I have never experienced until after having covid. Anyone else have this experience?

I have seen quite a bit of discussion about vaccine hesitancy in the minority community that has a history that can be quite different than the anti-vax politics you see in some of the white communities that are resisting vaccination (though some of it, fear of the unknown is very similar, and human nature tbh).

But there is also a significant socio-economic influence as well - when communities don't have access to healthcare as part of their regular lives, it will be more difficult for them to seek and find healthcare for a specific purpose like vacciation.

We have employees from about 20 states and the largest group of anti-vax and/or "wait and see" folks are white guys from Missouri and Arkansas. It's a mix of fake news, "Show Me State" stubbornness, mistrust of government, and guys who probably haven't been to a doctor's office since they were in elementary school who just don't GAF if they get COVID.
