if ever there was something i wish that i could be great at is chess. i forking love it like i love golf. i'm so bad at both, yet want to be good at. simply fascinating.I think for those familiar with Bobby Fischer’s life arc in chess (I wasn’t until recently), the parallels between Beth and Bobby are obvious - both in the micro as some of Beth’s personality traits and sub-storylines (Fischer wasn’t an orphan but his dad left when he was 2, he was identified as a prodigy through the local chess community and began challenging the local high school players when he was still quite young, etc.) draw from Fischer’s but also in the macro as Beth, like Fischer, found herself a David figure, battling the Goliath of Soviet chess - and success was elusive. And if Beth’s arc is like Bobby’s, then Borgov is Spassky.
Also apparently other aspects of Beth’s life are influenced by Tevis’s life, including being on heavy medications as a child.

Hopefully Beth’s later life experience won’t be like Fischer’s - good lord.
