DC to NO + Beach (1 Viewer)

Sitting on a beach
like…sitting
occasionally getting ankles wet, sometimes knees
but she can do nothing on a beach like no one I’ve ever seen

That definitely opens up your range. If you wanted to do the Wilmington thing, there's beaches from Ocean Isle on the south to North Topsail on the north - I have heard of people doing weeks on those beaches and enjoying it.

You could also do this:

Meet in Charleston and go to Hilton Head area, or down to Amelia Island.

Outer Banks (OBX) are gorgeous, one of my fave places on earth, I'm a little puzzled by the "big wave" comments, I've been there multiple times over the last 10 years and it is really no different than any beach in that respect....but it is way out of the way for you guys so probably not doable...

I'll add a few that haven't been mentioned Emerald Isle is one of the nicest beaches in NC and they have a sand bar about 100 yards out which is kind of neat, it is right in the middle of the state and easier to get to than OBX.

South of Wilmington is Sunset Beach (which is where we will actually be moving in about 10 months), great beach, plenty of room and nice places to stay, tons of good places to eat, if you go there I will send a list of places....Cheers and good luck

accommodations is going to be the other question - i imagine these will all be peak spots during peak season
what place i most likely to have availability and 'reasonable' (teachers' salary 'reasonable') rates for beginning of august for only 1 night?

Sea Trail is the community, but it looks like it is a minimum 3 day stay....

I think a single-night would require a hotel. There's plenty of beachfront hotels on that strip, I"m sure they have different price-points.

Here's one in Ocean Isle (down below Wilmington) that looks pretty decent. $199

But that's just an example.

There's probably more options than you think as far as airports go. There are seriously like 10 coastal airports between Jacksonville FL and Norfolk VA, including in Wilmington where you were thinking about going (no need to fly into Raleigh.) For the smaller ones, you'll need to connect in Atlanta or Charlotte but neither of those are out of the way for you.

Thanks for the heads up
Was wondering about that while futzing around the map and Wilmington looks fairly reasonable

Can you fly nonstop to RDU? Going nonstop is just a huge advantage on this sort of trip. That's what makes the Breeze flight attractive (and those introductory fares).

But it is true that you can fly into Wilmington and just meet there rather than drive from Raleigh, which would require her to go west from 95 for probably close to an hour to get to RDU. And then back.

Myrtle is another flight option. You dont' have actually go to Myrtle Beach to fly into there.

Ocean Isle is just north of Sunset Beach, when our friends house was being built a few years ago we stayed there for a week. I would suggest staying there but driving the 10 minutes to Sunset Beach which is a nicer beach and not as crowded....either way though you can't go wrong....
