Buying a new car/truck. (1 Viewer)

As some of the fellas around here know, I’ve bought a lot of cars. I think I’m over 50 at this point. But right now I’m not buying anything. Inventories are way too low and prices are too high. I was lucky I got my wife her Jeep back in February and a used Mini Countryman in May. I sold my Raptor for $5K more than I paid for it in 2019 and it had 22K miles on it.

My advice to everyone is to wait it out if you can. I’m looking to buy the F150 Lightning next year or perhaps a Land Rover Defender (because I’m apparently a masochist) but for now I’m not touching any new or used car.

Maybe there are deals to be found on minvans. I’m not paying attention but I can’t imagine Chrysler was selling Pacificas hand over fist.

I’m going to take your advice and the advice of many others on here and wait. It’s just killing me since I’ve been a truck guy all of my life and I hate rolling around in my wife’s Nissan Rogue.

I dont blame you.. i had a Rogue for just a few months as a company vehicle, i think it was a 2018 or 2019, and it was the most uncomfortable vehicle ive ever driven.. ive had vehicles that i could drive for 12 hrs straight and still feel pretty comfortable, but after just an hour in the Rogue, everything hurt.. i cant explain it, just poor seat design i guess.

Yea, trucks are the worse affected. It seems that everyone barely has any in stock so they‘re getting marked up. Usually we’d be looking at mid year sales with up $10K or more off certain trim levels but now it’s just not the case.

I’ve seen offers with about $8k off but that’s about it. What really gets me is I’m old enough to remember when trucks were the cheapest vehicles on a sales lot. I saw a loaded out Ram for sale for $99,895 and just about s..t my bedpan.

I really want a Chevy Silverado but might be interested in a Ram 1500.

That's a no brainer to me. I would take the Ram 1500. What you need to do is go and test drive them. I think that you will then see why I said so.

I have a friend that owns several car dealerships including Chevy, Ford, and Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep/Ram dealerships. I am going to see if I can't get him to give SR discounts for our members.

I did the same. Recently I sold my 2019 RAM 1500 Laramie 4x4 for $5300 more than I paid for it. Could not resist. Right now, I have no truck, and am not in a hurry to get another one either. I just use one of the other vehicles my wife and kids have here whenever I need to go somewhere... At least until prices come back down. On the other hand, prices may not come down. It's not like businesses don't take advantage in a situation like we have today. I was talking to a local dealership GM recently that said that now it is no longer about chip and material shortages and associated cost, it is about regulating the output of vehicles so that the demand continues to out pace supply, keeping the prices high. Conspiracy theory? Perhaps, but considering the source, I don't know.

Speaking of Mini's... I sold/traded that truck for a Mini Cooper S (John Cooper Works) in May for my daughter Sheena. IMO, I practically stole it! They don't give those things away, but I got it for what a regular Mini Cooper S 4 dr. goes for. That thing is a blast to drive. It's like having a 228 HP engine in an RTV. :hihi: So there are still some good deals to be had out there.

I understand that completely. For the most part, I've been driving my wife's SUV since I sold my truck. I feel the loss. Especially when I need to go and do things like fill up gas cans for my mower, or want to buy mulch or some large item. But the worst part is when I hook up the boat to go fishing. Her SUV tows the boat fine, but I feel like something on the vehicle is going to break at any time which would make my wife quite angry and therefore makes me feel quite uncomfortable doing it. Still, I will bide my time and HOPE that truck prices come back down to earth.

If you’re looking for a Ram and can wait for your order to be built, use Mark Dodge. Their orders are about 12% below MSRP.

ORDERS@MarkDodge.net and ask for Sandi

She priced me a 3500 Limited with MSRP of 92k and sale price of 81k plus TTL minus any incentives.

Got a question...my car was totaled by a tree falling on it. Geico says after they pay the bank (I also have Gap), they will pay me whatever equity I had in the vehicle. I owed less than what it was worth. Is that what they mean by equity? Or does it have to do with how much I had paid on it? I'm just not sure if auto equity works like home equity.

If you get that to happen please pass it on. I don’t know if there’s a way for you to tag me or something but I really want to know.

Right now from what I can see the Silverado offers the best choices for hand control acceleration and braking in both factory installed and after market options. With gas prices the way they are I may just have to wait until they come back down. My cheap butt doesn’t want a $60,000 piece of yard art.

I agree with Andrus on Dodge over Chevrolet…. Ive only had one Chevy vehicle , a 2017 Impala that i had as a company car for a couple of years.. everything on it felt cheap; whenever tuning the radio or adjusting the A/C, it felt like the parts were going to break if i wasnt really careful.. and things that should have been intuitive felt like they were designed to be confusing; little things like checking the trip odometer and tire pressure were unnecessarily confusing.. even the key fob sucked… ive had multiple Jeeps (Dodge family) and they offer good bang for the buck, and mine have knock-wood been relatively trouble-free.

Yea, I can see why many are saying that but it isn’t the case. They shut down a lot of Fabs last summer. Some were shut down to the point that they were no longer sterile. It takes a long time and a lot of money to sterilize a chip fab. Beyond that, it takes at least 6 months to make a new chip. So if you shut down manufacturing and restart it will be 6 months before the next chip is ready to go. There are actually several new fabs being built right now in Arizona.

I honestly don’t think we’ll be back to normal until next summer at the earliest.
