The MAIN reason I’m not freaking out over Onyemata’s suspension (1 Viewer)

...is that our D-line coach is Ryan Nielsen, arguably among the top 5 in the entire NFL.

Is Onyemata’s absence going to be missed? Absolutely! There will be a drop off.

But Nielsen will coach-up the other players, and the loss shouldn’t be catastrophic. In fact, this may have a silver lining because of the extra snaps the backups will get.

Nielsen is bad ars’d, and will coach next man up!

Don't forget that Rankins left too.

Nielsen's a wild man out there, his energy is insane. In the long run, his most valuable asset is probably recognizing talent, as you mentioned. We've lost 3-4 good linemen during Nielsen's tenure, but it's not his fault.
What was the promotion we gave Nielsen? Assistant head coach?

Yeah, he is!

Before he came here, I saw some vids of him at practice at NCSt. Man, dude was an off the chain maniac! 😂

But there was another vid featuring the D linemen I spoke about. They talked about Coach Nielsen n his style of coaching. It was funny as hell! They did impressions of him n everything! But you could tell how much they truly loved n respected him, n were thankful for him being their coach!

That’s when I first felt that the guy was gonna be special for us!

Exactly why SP did not want him to leave. I strongly believe in his ability to coach, but he’s not the one on the field unfortunately. However, I have not freaked out about the DT position. I’m more worried about LB and CB.
With the way the DL is shaping up at this too early point... I think Cam Jordan will line up inside quite a bit more than normaL... at least until #93 gets back.

Yep for now it seems we’ll likely keep 5 DEs: Cam, MD, Granderson, Tanoh, n Turner. So I can see Coach Nielsen kick one or 2 of em inside a lil more. In fact, even before the DO suspension, I felt like we were gonna see more DEs on the field anyway this season! I think we’ll see one of the DEs go n play inside when we’re in Nickel. I think we’ll see more 4 DE ( NASCAR) sets esp on 3rd n long too.

Along with Cam, Tanoh is the biggest player in the entire DE group. He also played DE in the 3-4. So he has some experience playing inside. And Davenport is tall, n a strong bull rusher. So I think putting him inside allows him to get directly in the QBs face, n help collapse the pocket too!

It opens the door for Ironhead Jr. How cool would that be if Nielson polishes that diamond. We will need some people to step up but he's definitely a coach that gets results. I'm exited about Tuttle and Roach year 2.
Same here -- they're both going to learn a lot this season. Isn't shy going into his third season?

This is a terrible loss for a defense that needs everyone on board in order to stay as a top tier defense.

Agreed

But it is what it is.

Meanwhile, the start of the season is a long way off, so no need to hit the panic button, at least for now.

So til then, let’s all try to stay positive, n see what happens!

I think you mighta meant Lorenzo Neal Jr!

But I got it, as well as your other points, n I agree!

As for Neal, I recently saw a podcast on him earlier, n it was pretty interesting n informative. Of course, the host brought up his pedigree. His dad was drafted by the Saints back in ‘93 n ended up playing 16 years in the NFL. He talked about Neals college career. He said it started of pretty well, with Neal was putting together a resume’ that could have made him a mid to high level draft pick. But an ACL injury really set him back. Then along came COVID, which prevented him from rehabbing n working as much as he needed to get back to 💯 %, n hurt his draft stock.

But when he was healthy, you could see the potential n upside he had to play in the NFL. So the Saints brought him in for a tryout at their rookie minicamp, liked what they saw, and signed him.

But finally, like you, the host brought up Coach Nielsen, n his ability to teach n “coach up” his players. So if there’s an NFL player somewhere inside of Lorenzo Neal Jr, then , IMO, Coach Nielsen IS the man who can get it outta him!
