So now that we know Winston can throw a deep ball well, when does tay go u see center? Obviously defense will expect him to run the ball now. He lost that 15 pounds to play qb but I think he needs the muscles to be strong enough to run the ball and take hits. Hopefully he gains the strength back soon.

For the amount we are paying him, does he go back to special teams? He was great as the gunner and even blocked a few punts but he’s 31 not sure if it would be wise to use him that way. He could play tight end in the slot spot or some
Wildcat formation.

Losing weight doesn't mean losing muscle/strength. But it does mean losing some extra natural cushion. He's still a pretty thick, muscular dude. I think he'll be fine. And he will probably have a couple passing plays drawn up. Possibly designed as run fakes, or out of a run formation to throw off the defense. Look for us to set those up as designed runs early in the season.

That stuffed run he had they ran a bunch last year. They had success with it then but teams are catching on. They jumped it pretty hard, the play was dead. That's the kind of stuff Payton uses though. He sets up that play and when you cheat in anticipation he burns you in another direction.

Other than that he had two 1st down conversions. One running, one passing. Nothing wrong with that. He'll be our short-yardage specialist and be fine.

It is an interesting question.

I think Taysom can still bring a lot to the gameplan - but his need is definitely reduced with the fact the Jameis can throw the deep ball and showed his ability to move the chains with his legs. All of those things were things Taysom brought to the game that Drew (for the most part) couldn’t.

So as a gadget player, Taysom can still bring some things to the table - but the need for those services are significantly reduced.

I hate to say this because I really love Taysom and what he can do, but I think his future might be brighter with another team as their starting QB.

His price tag is way too high for a gadget player and he is getting older.

Like I said I loved screaming Taytay at the TV when he would bowl over guys it was the best.

Not sure of his longevity doing that.

The threat of Hill throwing had nothing to do with Drew not being able to throw down field. The whole idea of the joker role is to create mismatches. Taysom isn’t as natural a passer as either JW or Drew obviously, but the fact that they will have to chose personnel that can stop the run, or leave extras in the box, creates potential better looks down the field. You aren’t likely to see him slinging it a lot, but you pass it to help set up his run plays and vice versa.

Let's remember he's still the backup to Winston. He's a capable QB that can fill in at a moments notice. Don't want him nicked up too much but I would like to see a bigger role than the one he had this past Sunday.

If the only thing Payton uses him for is to occasionally line him in the wildcat formation and have him run the ball, it will be the biggest waste of both his talent and his offseason training. Let's face it, the guy spent the last 8-9 months learning/preparing to be the starting QB. He knows as much about our offense as Jameis, if not more. Nothing is more effective against a defense than the element of surprise.

If you put him behind center 2-3 times a game, DON'T RUN HIM EVERY TIME!!! That's exactly what defenses will be setup to stop. Taysom knows all the plays, all the receivers, and all the timing from months of practice at the position. Hill will be a bona fide weapon to sneak into that role if you let him use what he has learned. Just because Jameis is the starter doesn't mean you can never use Taysom as you would a real QB.

inserting hill at qb during successful drives is distracting and (as we've seen) potentially costly

mix him in at other positions while moving the chains

winston can demonstrably run with the ball when needed

Where? I just don't see the NFL starter opportunities out there for a QB who will be 32 at the beginning of next season, who still doesn't have a lot of QB experience and hasn't yet shown that he has a full command of the position at the pro level.

If he really wants to be a starting QB, his best shot might be in an alternate league. Maybe track down an opportunity to develop in the CFL and see if he has enough time to come back to the NFL and cobble together an end-of-career-run as a stopgap starter. But that window is getting narrower with each passing season.

Possibly he could decide to focus entirely on playing QB and settle in as a veteran journeyman backup, which isn't a bad gig, and perhaps be in the right place at the right time to start some games, but I think he's facing long odds, at this point, to compete for and secure an NFL starting QB job.

Still time to put some healthy wieght back on in a 17-18 week season (maybe beyond).

I don't think Taysom will ever be a quarterback who starts for a team all season. I think he has a lot of value, but not as an every down QB. I do wish him luck if he wants to pursue that career.
