Question Did anyone notice the Face Guarding/PI that happened during the "Phantom QB Roughing" call? (1 Viewer)

I don’t think it was obvious. I watched it a couple of times, and it’s not obvious that he made contact early, nor face guarding. I think we got lucky with the roughing call. It was a violent hit, but clean. He fell to the side of Winston. Didn’t seem to bother Winston. Wouldn’t have mattered to the final outcome, but it would’ve given them some hope.

There is no face guarding rule in the NFL. Your DBs can have their backs to the QB and in the receivers face. What you can’t do is put your hands all over the receiver (which is what the Packers DB was doing). He literally had both hands on the shoulders of the Saints receiver (Johnson maybe?). So it was illegal.

AND if you watch the replay it’s fairly clear the Packers DB (Savage) trapped the ball on the INT. He didn’t have his hands under the ball, he had the end of the football and the tip clearly touches the ground. He used his chest and the ground to keep the ball from moving. If the Packers hadn’t been called for roughing Payton would have challenged and there’s decent shot it would’ve been overturned.

I noticed that too. They only showed it once, but it appeared to be a trap.

It was either Face Guarding or P I . JMHO
Buck and Troy kept saying, "How could anyone miss that?"
I'm screaming, "How did you clowns, NOT see the face guarding?"
Thanks in advance
There's no doubt that was pass interference. The roughing call was junk. That throw was also Winston's worse pass of the day. Underthrown into triple coverage in the red zone.

Under the rules when Aikman joined the league back in the 1980s, yeah the roughing call was junk.

But it was correct under the current rules for roughing the passer.

"When tackling a passer who is in a defenseless posture (e.g., during or just after throwing a pass), a defensive player must not unnecessarily or violently throw him down"

You don't have to Siragusa-style drive your weight through the QB into the ground anymore. It is enough that you unnecessarily throw the QB down just after he has thrown the ball, and that happened on that play.

We all know that the rules have changed, and we don't have to like it, but these are today's rules. I want Jameis Winston to be protected just as much as Tom Brady is protected.

I think the call was because Winston was "forcefully thrown to the ground". That's legal for anyone but the QB, and they will call it half the time. We got lucky.

Oops, yeah what Broad St said.

He hit him high around the neck area. I think that's why it was called. It was bad IMHO.

Roughing call was bad IMO, but no need to apologize for it. We could have 10 bad calls per game go our way for the rest of the season, and it wouldn't make up for the nonsense we've endured as Saints fans over the years.

Oh yeah, and the score was 38-3.
