The taysom quandary. (1 Viewer)

Hill has talked about getting leaner to play QB this season, but has an exact weight loss been publicly revealed? I've seen everything from 10-20 pounds.

He's listed at 221 pounds on the current roster, which puts him right there among WRs and RBs, and 2 inches shorter and 10 pounds lighter than Juwan Johnson. He might not be able to recover all of his lost bulk this season, but he can certainly start trending upwards if that's the plan.

Regardless, it's not as if he's suddenly too small to be used creatively and effectively as a skill player in the running and receiving game.

So now that we know Winston can throw a deep ball well, when does tay go u see center? Obviously defense will expect him to run the ball now. He lost that 15 pounds to play qb but I think he needs the muscles to be strong enough to run the ball and take hits. Hopefully he gains the strength back soon.

For the amount we are paying him, does he go back to special teams? He was great as the gunner and even blocked a few punts but he’s 31 not sure if it would be wise to use him that way. He could play tight end in the slot spot or some
Wildcat formation.
I don't think defenses were ever scared of Taysom throwing the deep ball in 18-19-20 considering his deep throws hang in the air like punts. I think he should be used in a combination of special teams, short yardage runs (maybe even straight handoffs like we did on that 3rd and short on Sunday), and as a flanker/h-back (the one area I really think he has noticeably improved is his route running and pass catching).

He may be a gadget player but Payton needs some new ways to use that gadget. Lining him up to run fools no one at this point. Unless it’s perfectly blocked, Hill is going nowhere.
Also, Winston ran run and is big enough to do it every so often. Sunday Taysom coming in at the goal line seemed almost like a distraction as the offense with Winston was rolling and that play every defense has seen and was expecting. I dunno. If they are going to get funky with Taysom at QB let him see some action between the 20s where they mess around with him and Winston

I can see Payton setting up future plays by running taysom in short yardage situations. I’m betting that you will see him line up in pistol, fake a run up the middle, then jump pass to an open juwan, ala college Tebow.
No doubt. SP plays the long game. Obviously he's calling plays to win the game but he's also calling plays to put on film.

I know he wanted to put that deep ball off of play action on tape early. The past few years defenses have basically ignored play action. Now we have a QB that can drop a 60 yard dime from anywhere on the field. That will create more room for the offense to operate. We already saw it against Green Bay. The field seemed so much bigger. Receivers were catching the ball without a defender draped over them. The backs had room to run.

I agree. Teams have seen how the Saints use Taysom and I don't think he will be as effective this year doing the same things they did last couple years.
I disagree with those who say that teams fear seeing Taysom in the game, especially at QB.

I hate to say this because I really love Taysom and what he can do, but I think his future might be brighter with another team as their starting QB.

His price tag is way too high for a gadget player and he is getting older.

Like I said I loved screaming Taytay at the TV when he would bowl over guys it was the best.

Not sure of his longevity doing that.
Just curious, which NFL team right now do you think would be better off going with Taysom Hill as starter than who they presently have?

You did say "his future".....so obviously you're referring to next season or beyond, but all I can presently go on is who teams presently have at QB.

Houston? Tyrod Taylor has done well as a starter in the past. Washington? Taylor Heinicke started a playoff game last season against Tampa and played well.

I agree. He didn't morph into Doug Flutie this offseason. Dude is still well built. At 6'2", 221 lbs he compares favorably to most of the top RBs. The only guy who makes him look small is Derrick Henry at 6'4", 247 lbs but he makes everyone look small. He's basically the same size as Joe Mixon, Le'Veon Bell, Adrian Peterson, and Todd Gurley. Nobody is calling them small.

Where? I just don't see the NFL starter opportunities out there for a QB who will be 32 at the beginning of next season, who still doesn't have a lot of QB experience and hasn't yet shown that he has a full command of the position at the pro level.

If he really wants to be a starting QB, his best shot might be in an alternate league. Maybe track down an opportunity to develop in the CFL and see if he has enough time to come back to the NFL and cobble together an end-of-career-run as a stopgap starter. But that window is getting narrower with each passing season.

Possibly he could decide to focus entirely on playing QB and settle in as a veteran journeyman backup, which isn't a bad gig, and perhaps be in the right place at the right time to start some games, but I think he's facing long odds, at this point, to compete for and secure an NFL starting QB job.

I agree with this....I don't think he is long term starting NFL QB material. If he were in his mid 20's I may feel differently....

Dude is a beast, teams don't want to see Taysom in there at QB or any other position..Ace in the hole baby

Lol. No one fears him at QB. They love it as it interrupts the rhythm of the offense. As for the other positions they aren't too worried because we have better players at pretty much every position than Hill. His value is the fact you don't know where he'll line up and being a distraction. Line him up in the backfield and suddenly everyone's worried about a trick play than their assignment.
