Question Did anyone notice the Face Guarding/PI that happened during the "Phantom QB Roughing" call? (1 Viewer)

It was DPI for sure, but Buck and Aikman were so butt-hurt and lobbying against the Roughing the Passer call that they didn’t show the obvious no call on the PI!

That was actually a really good read by Winston on that play… that play should either be a TD, PI, or incomplete.

Further proof Buck and Aikman are hot garbage!

At 6:11 in the 3rd, Kpassagnon is held while closing in on Rodgers, who throws incomplete from the end zone. An OL hooks him around the shoulder while also clutching and stretching his jersey, altering his momentum and forcing him to the ground. My understanding is not only is that holding, but should have been a safety.

I kept yelling the same thing! And, I think in the 2nd quarter, Cam Jordan was held pretty good. He must be the DE that gets the least amount of holding calls!

I think the reason roughing was called showed through in the one angle from behind Winston, where the call originated. It appeared from that angle that the defender almost clotheslined him by the way his head jerked during the hit along with the defender leaving his feet to finish. We've seen less called against Davenport tbh.

From the other angles it looked ok, but that one makes the call understandable imho. It was very much like the hit on Brees a few years back with the 49'ers.

There is no face guarding rule in the NFL. Your DBs can have their backs to the QB and in the receivers face. What you can’t do is put your hands all over the receiver (which is what the Packers DB was doing). He literally had both hands on the shoulders of the Saints receiver (Johnson maybe?). So it was illegal.

AND if you watch the replay it’s fairly clear the Packers DB (Savage) trapped the ball on the INT. He didn’t have his hands under the ball, he had the end of the football and the tip clearly touches the ground. He used his chest and the ground to keep the ball from moving. If the Packers hadn’t been called for roughing Payton would have challenged and there’s decent shot it would’ve been overturned.

I don’t think the pick would have stood on review - it hit the ground and it wasn’t one of those situations where the tip touches but the defender otherwise has control. He was cradling it.

Something else I noticed but doesn’t have to do with PI was Jameis getting off the ground after his second run and trying to give the ball to a Green Bay player who swatted it away. Afterward I saw a ref saying something to Jameis. I hope he was warning him about taunting. That’s the kind of thing he did to the Saints as a Buc and hope he doesn’t continue that if that’s what it was.

Exactly!

And... I said so when it happened.

(But not nearly as descriptive as you did!)

Under the rules when Aikman joined the league back in the 1980s, yeah the roughing call was junk.

But it was correct under the current rules for roughing the passer.

"When tackling a passer who is in a defenseless posture (e.g., during or just after throwing a pass), a defensive player must not unnecessarily or violently throw him down"

You don't have to Siragusa-style drive your weight through the QB into the ground anymore. It is enough that you unnecessarily throw the QB down just after he has thrown the ball, and that happened on that play.

We all know that the rules have changed, and we don't have to like it, but these are today's rules. I want Jameis Winston to be protected just as much as Tom Brady is protected.
Right, and Winston's feet came totatly from under him. It was like he levitated in the air, flat on his back.

It was a violent high hit on a QB. Like it or not that's going to be roughing most of the time. But what if Winston decides to bring the ball back in at the last second instead of passing it? If that happens I guess it's just a clean Sack?

It's tough but you can't hit too high, too low, too late, or too forcefully. They have to run towards the QB as fast as they can and I guess just try to bear hug him or put their hands up without touching the QBs head. Has to be frustrating chasing these elusive QBs all game and then get flagged when you finally get a hit on them. I'm going to do some research to see what coaches are telling their guys to do once they get to the QB.

The ball also may have hit the ground. But doesn't matter. Games over.

But if you’re the Rams in a playoff game against the Saints you can face guard then tackle with head to head contact a Saints WR 3 seconds before ball arrives without ever looking back.without ever looking back
