Analysis Saints Shortcomings at Receiver Hampering Offense (1 Viewer)

I feel like when Thomas comes back, we won’t even be worried about receivers. Give us good blocking and the group of Thomas, Callaway, Harris, and the others will be more than enough. I do think it should be addressed after the season, as I think we’ll be looking to replace TQS. Just a gut feeling there because I can’t see us paying him big after so many years of inconsistencies with injury and production. I welcome him back as soon as possible, though, and hope he can contribute.

That may be correct, but football is a violent game, and injuries are inevitable especially at the skill positions. If losing your #1 at any skill position means you can no longer consistently move the ball then that position needs to be addressed. It's one thing to lose your #1 and dip a little in production, but its another thing alltogether to lose your #1 and completely stall out. We are 32nd in passing. Thomas is out for now and there is no guarantee he ever comes back to full strength (physically or in production) with Winston as the QB.

I feel like the GB game hid a lot of our WR problems. Yes JW threw 5 TDs, but a solid defense performance setting up great field position and an early lead vs a team that decided not to show up in week 1 also helped. You can't rely on on those things every game nor 50yd TDs every game. He had -100 yards in the air if you remove the bomb to Harris, and we need to be able to move the ball on the ground and air in order to win. Any team with a solid CB1 to mark MT13 and a scheme to limit AK41 can currently beat us easily.

Luckily not every team has that top CB1 nor the LB/S combo to limit AK, but the ones that are playoff caliber teams usually do. Winston is not Drew. He has not shown the ability (yet at least) to accuratly hit those 5-10 yard quick routes through tiny windows in order to incramentally move the ball if the WRs arent getting much seperation. If he can't do that then teams will key on taking AK out of the game, and then we stall again. Harris may get over the top several times this year, but thats not enough to win us enough games to make a playoff run.

I will be very upset if we do not make a big splash in the draft and/or in free agency that addresses the WR position. Will we have the financial or picks in order to do so? No ides, but we should have added more than Trequan in the last 4 years who would have helped up in the long term knowing that Drew was not going to be around much longer and that most QB are not him and cannot make average WRs produce the way he did.

So the Saints go from 5 TD passes to 3 different WRs (+Kamara) to shortcomings at WR hampering offense in less than 7 full days.

Interesting indeed...

The Packers were terrible in Game 1. If they played Game 1 like last week, the Saints are 0-2.

We could say if the Panthers got game 1 version of us, they’d have lost, also. It doesn’t matter. All teams are dealing with a very small sample size at the moment and trying to figure out who they are. I think GB is better than what they showed us, and I think we’re better than how we play last week.

I don’t disagree. It’s been and still is a need, but nothing we can really do now to really address it. So many resources went into building this defense and keeping the o-line strong, so it’s kind of understandable that WR has been put lower on the priority list for a few years. I still think we will be more than fine once we get Thomas and TQS back. If the o-line gets it together, Harris is going to keep burning defenses.

Good into the season, CSP was like, alright, lets fly under the radar. Week 2, CSP was like, alright week 1 was too much, lets tone that back down. After week 2 loss, alright, that's more like it. Week 3 game plan, lets just win by a FG to win by 1 point at the end of regulation to keep the teams guessing which team will come out on week 4 😉

I meant I hate to say it but Harris definitely isn't your 'biggest' weapon....

He's going to be subpar in tight spaces due to his size. He's got no body to block out the defender. His routes will naturally have to occur more than 15 yards down field for him to have time to separate.

Down our top two receivers due to injury (Thomas and TQS) and are pretty much starting our 3rd and 4th string WR along with a player who was previously out the league in Hogan and just signed a guy off the street in Stills but people still think we are ok? We saw what happens on defense without the starters, but don't understand that very same thing is affecting the offense.
