Analysis Saints Shortcomings at Receiver Hampering Offense (1 Viewer)

Down our top two receivers due to injury (Thomas and TQS) and are pretty much starting our 3rd and 4th string WR along with a player who was previously out the league in Hogan and just signed a guy off the street in Stills but people still think we are ok? We saw what happens on defense without the starters, but don't understand that very same thing is affecting the offense.

Actually, the defense held very well, all things considered. They held for 3 1/2 quarters, but the TOP was a killer. 17 points allowed in 3 1/2 quarters, considering the time they were on the field (almost 40 minutes) and the people they were missing, I think that's very good, if not impressive.

Of course, if it weren't for a gift by Darnold, the offense would've left with a goose egg.

I also remember a time when the Saints signed CBs off the street to play on MNF...

Now apply that to how the offense performed and you see my point.

I feel like when Thomas comes back, we won’t even be worried about receivers. Give us good blocking and the group of Thomas, Callaway, Harris, and the others will be more than enough. I do think it should be addressed after the season, as I think we’ll be looking to replace TQS. Just a gut feeling there because I can’t see us paying him big after so many years of inconsistencies with injury and production. I welcome him back as soon as possible, though, and hope he can contribute.
I think a lot of people over value Harris in the offense because they assume Payton can just draw up tons of plays for him. He is a valuable occasional threat. if we can hit him on a bomb like game one every few games or so, that will be awesome. But until he proves he can be more Versatile, he is part of your top 3 depth out of desperation. I hope he does prove it.

having said that, I ruffled at the use of refusal to surround. We brought in anyone we felt could help. We weren’t working with a ton of money.

TQS, even though he’s not even close to a #1 WR… and a borderline #2 starter…

Will make an impact immediately once he returns to action.

Not because he’s so good, but because he has the ability that will force defenses to at least respect him.

His presence will help Marquez Callaway get open

I don’t disagree. It’s been and still is a need, but nothing we can really do now to really address it. So many resources went into building this defense and keeping the o-line strong, so it’s kind of understandable that WR has been put lower on the priority list for a few years. I still think we will be more than fine once we get Thomas and TQS back. If the o-line gets it together, Harris is going to keep burning defenses.
For how long will we have TQS back before he is out again with injury? Who knows if Mike Thomas will be the same player? So many ifs that are uncertain. Unfortunately we do not have the resources to get a stud wr. However the o line will improve when we get our center back and Jameis will have more time to find our mediocre receivers. Issue is how big of a hole will we be in by the time that happens.

I tend to disagree, our only problem against Carolina was not having our starting center and offensive line coaches.

The WR corps they're so quick to denigrate looked just fine against GB.

Let's look at the depth chart and break this thing down:

Marquez Callaway - UDFA

Deonte Harris - UDFA

Little Jordan Humphrey - UDFA

Ty Montgomery - 3rd round

Chris Hogan - UDFA who was snagged off a lacrosse team this offseason

So right now we have exactly one player who was drafted on the depth chart. I don't know how it came to this but that's where we are.

So the Saints go from 5 TD passes to 3 different WRs (+Kamara) to shortcomings at WR hampering offense in less than 7 full days.

Interesting indeed...

Anyone who thinks the WR's were the main problem against Carolina, really weren't watching....

Don't disagree, I really want to see what our WR corps looks like full strength, I also hope our offensive line play last week was an anomaly (and I think it was), getting McCoy back sooner rather than later would help....

I disagree on Harris. I do believe Payton will keep drawing up plays for him, specifically deep routes. Payton himself said he was going to continue to get him more involved. I see no reason to believe otherwise, as he's the fastest receiver on the team. Still, yes, he's a depth piece, and comparing his spot on the depth chart, it's hard to knock him when looking at other teams 3rd or 4th receivers. Specifically when Thomas comes back, I think defenses will have a tough time defending he, Callaway, and Kamara, with Harris running deep towards the end zone.
