I agree with him, and not just pertaining to QB’s. The league is butter soft now, I understand why they have to be but it still sucks imo. I miss the old days, hard nose defense, terrific hits that weren’t penalized….

I don't think the low hit rule is being enforced correctly. It's one thing to roll up on a QB from behind unexpectedly, and it's another to grab them around the waist and slide down to pull them to the turf. This is actually worse than the garbage roughing calls when a defender hits/grazes the QBs head with an open hand from trying to swat at the ball.

This ridiculous enforcement almost makes sacking QBs impossible to do while being blocked. And WTH ever about the hit on Jameis being one of the worst roughing calls all season when Turner got 2 of the lame going low roughing calls.

Most of the personal foul type calls should be judgement calls, but that only works if the league had well trained refs that could be relied on to fairly call penalties.

I really don’t like college sports, but on a Saturday I’ll occasionally watch a game and the quality of the reffing in those games is noticeably better. I rarely watch a college game and severely disagree with the refs.

I also had the same experience watching some of the failed professional startup leagues that formed recently.

I know this isn’t just a “I’m a salty Saints fan” thing either, because I am often baffled at the NFL refs when watching games I don’t care about.

They aggressively switch back and forth between letting things go and calling ticky-tack fouls. Many times from play-to-play, not just from crew to crew.

The same ref will call one play holding, and let another play go, and no one can spot the difference between the two.

With good refs you could trust them to make judgement calls, but since the NFL refs aren’t good they are told to call ridiculous penalties that go against the spirit of the rule to cover themselves.

I just wonder how much further they can go with QB safety. You can't hit them low. You can't hit them high. You can't hit them hard. You can't tackle them and fall on them. The QBs can still elude pressure and scramble around making plays for their team but defenders are limited. I understand the league wants to protect the QBs but at some point it's like, where do we go from here? We used to joke about two hand touch or flag football for QBs but right now that seems inevitable.

It's so frustrating as a fan because getting a Sack used to be one of the most exciting plays in the game. Now when we get a Sack I have to wait and make sure the Sack met all of the nebulous criteria and no flags were thrown.

I saw a good example of inconsistency in the Panthers va Texans game. The rookie Texans QB got plastered and the tackler landed with all of his weight in the QB. There was no effort to land on the side. He also hit the QB in the head as he hit him for the tackle. I thought that was an easy roughing call. It was way worse than what happened to Winston. If the call could be challenged, j think the Texans would’ve easily gotten the call. That’s why all calls should be challengable.

What the NFL needs is an independent eye in the booth that can override calls, it'll never happen but that is what can fix the poor on the field officiating.

I'm really starting to buy into the conspiracy theory that some of these judgement calls are used to influence outcomes. There's too many gameplay variables in a FB game to completely fix one, but a holding here, a roughing there, with a sprinkle of a weak PI here and a convenient NO CALL can sorta swing a game in a convenient favor.

These subjective rules seem to be designed to give officials power to influence the outcome of games. In addition to the ridiculous RTP calls taking place, the helmet rule is also garnering questions on its lack of consistency in application. My question is that when a defender lowers his head, it's a foul and everyone squaks about how they're trying to get that out of the game and its going to be called every time, yada yada. Well, what about the ball carrier who then lowers his head into a defender? There is no defenseless excuse to use anymore as the helmet rule is now being applied to all situations, not just defenseless players. So why can't the defenders be given the same protection because that can cause injury as well?

Again, officials are being given more power to influence the outcome of the games with these subjective calls. I'm not sure if the league intentionally wants this or is a byproduct of their zeal to protect players from injury. Might be a combo of both but to deny that is being intellectually dishonest.

The game has really become more on the offensive side. Roughing the passer has become the same rank as what is a catch, pass interference, etc. I understand protecting the QB for business reasons, but let's be real, they are players just like everyone else on the field. They are meant to be hit. Also not too keen on the rule where defenders can't go low. I get it but c'mon man. When a corner is about to be smashed by an O-Line, what else should he do? Move out the way?

The league has made all these changes to improve on safety, yet they still have teams play on Thursday nights with no time to recover or prepare properly. Just let the boys play like the good old days.

I understand both sides. I get that the league and teams want to protect usually the most expensive player on the team but at what cost? In most careers (Police, Military, Firemen) people always say “they know what the risks are when they sign up, same should be true for the NFL. These players know the risks of playing football since most have been playing since they were 6-7 years old. If you don’t want to get hit or chance being hurt find another career path. These players make way more than just about any other career out there, they are more than compensated for their injuries

Don't get it twisted...these rules are there to protect the players but it isn't for the players benefit...this is the NFL protecting their investments...no one wants to see Baltimore vs KC with Chad Henne squaring off against Tyler Huntley, the NFL knows it. Starting backup quarterbacks tank the overall "value" of a NFL broadcast.

He’s right.

It’s a tough game to watch anymore. Between the numerous flags and game delays I pretty much only watch or listen to the Saints. I’ll probably always be a fan. Old habits really hard to break. But, as each year passes I care about it less and less.

Yep. They care zero about the players. It’s also about concussion/lawsuit protection.
