Cam Jordan speaking about QB’s being too protected by the league…(PFT article) (1 Viewer)

It's so frustrating as a fan because getting a Sack used to be one of the most exciting plays in the game. Now when we get a Sack I have to wait and make sure the Sack met all of the nebulous criteria and no flags were thrown.
indeed. I don’t even want to imagine what it would have been like if these rules had been in place during the Dome Patrol days. We would have had to stop and talk about it between every play.

I get Cam's point, but let's be honest. It's all fun and games watching the opponents QB get killed. But none of us would have wanted to see 40 year old Drew taking those hits. That level of protection of QBs is what has allowed him and Brady to play so long.

Iron men like Favre don't exist as much today. That dude was old, took the hits and kept playing. That wouldn't be the case for many today. Besides, franchise QBs are so expensive that a team usually goes to crap once the backups come in. So while I think the level of protection they receive is a little too much, I understand why the league has taken this approach.

I understand completely why they do, but I still don’t like it. I miss the old days, smash mouth, Ronnie Lott, Dome Patrol, back when hard nosed defense was applauded.

The game is butter soft now, but I certainly understand why it’s that way.

If they at least would call it for absolutely every QB, backup or superstar, I‘d be fine with it

But it’s just so selective. The likes of Brady and Mahomes get every call their way, while lesser QBs get killed on the field.

For a defensive player there should be some way to put pressure on the QBs.
All those protection rules should vanish once a QB breaks the tackle box

Now that the league is officially in bed with the Vegas sportsbooks, I can only imagine the fallout if... correction... when one of these calls costs Vegas a sheet-ton of money.

The bad thing with officiating is its all judgement call by that official. Look at the agrees and disagrees on this board from calls. Everyone has their own opinion. It's no different for officials. No matter how you are trained everyone's opinion won't be the same.
Now the SEC officials that missed the down in the Penn St. Auburn game last week, wow. Should never happen.

I don’t watch college, but on that note:
Friend of mine is a huge Mississippi State fan and he says they were robbed terribly against Memphis. On a punt return dead ball and an onside kick.

They were. The ball was technically still live but the covering official had already come in waving his arms signaling the play over. When the Memphis player picked it up he quit and let the play go. They scored a TD. The replay didn't even overturn it. Total screw up right there.

Most people think the whistle is the end of a play but its actually the officials hand or arms in the air that officially kills the play.
