Kawaan Baker (1 Viewer)

Yeah, I think it’s a combination of learning n developing. The players ahead of him all have more experience. Quez n Deonte were here last year. Hogan n Stills are NFL vets, who can usually can pickup anybody’s playbooks quicker than rooks.Kenny was already here too, so it took him all of a couple of weeks to leapfrog over all of the other WRs. He’s playing really well, n should have TWO forty yd TDs right now too! ( Can I say it: They killin Kenny! 🤣)!

I also think Baker n Easop Winston were kept on the PS as insurance in case Deonte got suspended. If his injury puts him out for a few weeks, perhaps one of em will be elevated. Or maybe not.

We’ll see.

Baker is stashed for this season unless Harris goes down.

With Thomas and Smith on the shelf expecting to come back, it will be tough to re-stash Kawaan after there is some real game film on him and still have Thomas, Smith, Harris, Calloway, and Stills on the active roster.

Agreed.

Meanwhile, on a side note:

I know it’s jus on paper for now, but IF they can stay healthy n IF MT n TQS n Jameis can quickly develop some chemistry, this can actually become a pretty damn good WR group!!! We’ve already seen what Quez, Deonte n Kenny bring with their quickness and speed. Now add in Mike n Trequan, who are more physical, can go over the middle on those 10-15 yd intermediate routes, n can move the chains! Makes for a pretty talented n complimentary group!

Something to definitely keep an eye on!

The moment you move him to the active roster, if he shows any promise, you risk losing him. Reality is, when healthy, Thomas, Smith, Calloway, and Harris are your top 4 receivers. Montgomery gives you versatility and you also have Stills who has arguably been the third most productive receiver even though he has done much. So the numbers game complicates moving him up to the roster knowing he is not going to crack the top 4 on the depth chart.

Wow. Holy crap. I literally forgot he existed until just now.
I didn't forget I just forgot his name. Saw this thread started yesterday and thought "That's his name!"

Probably has the Meachem learning skills. It took Meachem a year to crack the roster.

Kawaan has straight line speed, but he has very little quickness, based on his combine results, so I'd be surprised if he could get separation from NFL CBs.

The only WR receiver that has proven his worth when on the field and healthy is Thomas. Callaway has promise. Harris is not a every down receiver. His role is just the long pass and the return game. Hate to see him out there sometimes because he gets banged up too much. The rest are fill-ins. They also have games where they disappear. The Saints need to start drafting valued WRs.
.

Let me put you on game. You seen what Calloway was doing in the preseason and you see what he did the first 2 games. You see what Zach Wilson did in preseason and what he is doing now. Say it with me, PRESEASON.
Lol yep.

💯 and especially on Harris. Kept saying it over and over when reading about how he’d be a stud WR (and he would, but he won’t stay healthy in that role).

Agree Saints need to find another blue chip reciever, M.T probably only has only another two seasons left in him after this year. Skilled recievers are hard to find hopefully N.O lands another one.

With Paytons offensive acumen another premiere receiver will make this offense truly dynamic

Historically Payton has NOT retained late round WRs unless they are a return man
In fairness, no teams keep late round picks at any position very often. However, I would say that Payton has kept a fair amount of his late WR picks, if you count the 5th round as late. The Saints picked Stills in the 5th round in 2013 and kept him, Mike Haas in the 6th in 2006, Arrington in the 7th in 2008, and most importantly Colston in the 7th in 2006. So he has kept 2 out of the 4 late round receivers prior to Kawaan, which is probably above the league average.
