Hey everyone, can anyone share what exactly was Mike Thomas injury and whether or not he’ll come back as good as he used to be? Obviously he doesn’t have Brees throwing him the ball but he’s still amazing. He would catch everything thrown his way back in the day.

From what I understand he suffered a severe high ankle sprain during the Tampa game week 1 last season.

He rehabbed and returned late last season but was still apparently hobbled by the injury (or possibly reaggravated the injury).

Early in the off-season he opted to continue rehabbing the injury as opposed to surgery. The rehab didn’t work and he decided to have surgery to repair the ankle - very late into the off-season which means he would be on the PUP list to start the season.

So…in short, nobody really knows what’s going on with his ankle but it’s been surgically repaired and I assume when he’s cleared to play- he’ll be back.

High ankle sprains are almost impossible to rehab without surgery, but not hard to repair. It just takes time. Physically he should be fine when he returns. His injury was mismanaged with lots of poor decisions. Payton was really disgusted by the way it was handled, he just shakes his head and refuses to discuss it.

Very few high ankle sprains are treated surgically. It use to be a 6-8 week injury. Today they wrap them and get them back on the field in a few weeks. I’d love to see a study looking at initial management and relation to reinjury or delayed healing

That's kind of my question.....what kind of ankle sprain to begin with requires surgery? That seems much more than just a sprain.

I thought he damage the ligaments around the ankle, therefore, needing surgery after all.

It was such an innocent play when it happened. Yeah, he was blocking and got rolled up on but it didn't seem to be that bad of a roll up.

He could of had the surgery at the end of the 2020 season, but elected to wait til June or what ever. Doesn't seem like a team orientated player. JMO

I suffered a very similar injury back in February of this year, tore my deltoid, anterior tactiofibular, interior fibular, calcanfibular ligament, and contusions to several others.. correct me on my spellings…

Anyways my doctor said since I’m not playing sports or needing to be as active as I was back in high school to let it heal on it’s own through rehab and no surgery. I’m just getting released from rehab and finally walking straight most of the time. Find myself walking “duck footed” at times.. still can’t jog.

I asked my PT due to him being a sports guy how similar my injury was to a Michael Thomas. They’re almost identical. I know exactly what he’s gone through and he’s a world class athlete..

Right, I was assuming severe HAS.
