New Orleans Breakers (1 Viewer)

So, the Breakers are back in New Orleans?
Technically, they will be back in Birmingham for the first season along with the other teams, but I am excited about this. From what I have read, teams will play at Legion Field and Protective Stadium. Not a huge fan of Legion, but have heard really good things about Protective.

I assumed they would destroy Legion after new stadium was built. Count me out on any game at Legion!

I watched the opening game at Protective against Liberty on tee-vee on one of the CBS cable stations.

They did a fabulous job on that new stadium. It's beautiful. I was at UAB in the early years right after they first started their football program and they were practicing right outside of one of my freshman undergrad classes in a big patch of grass. They've come a long way since getting canceled a few years ago.

There is one UAB football alumnus that I will never claim. You probably know who, too.

You're also probably already aware of this, but they built the stadium downtown in the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Center area. I imagine the parking is a nightmare down there.

I went to a few Iron games there in 2018. It was the first time I had visited there in 15+ years. It was slightly improved, but still wouldn't go to attend a USFL game there.
I watched a couple of CFL games there.

Yep, they had that, too.

The Birmingham Barracudas.

Agee on all counts. Also, parking at Legion was also a nightmare, but for different reason.

Plus, back during the 1974 season, Birmingham also had the short-lived Americans franchise with local Alabama native Kenny Stabler as their starting QB, after he'd decided (and then later regretted) his decision to.sign for more money with the upstart, larger money deal with the Americans. Stabler didn't last or stay too long with WFL's Americans because he could see it was a failing adventure, and he didnt want to lose his new starting Raiders QB job, he'd spent several years fighting to reach to to.unseat Darryl Lamonica by the end of the 1972 season. Legion Field was a great stadium with a wonderful game-day tailgating experience, and it had many, many outstanding mostly NCAAF memories, but from a Auburn fan's perspective, Legion Field was always Alabama's home away from home.and they played half of.their home games there every season for over 40+ years. Birmingham was and still is an Crimson Tide town, so it always seemed very hollow whenever city and UA school officials tried arguing from 1947-1988, that Iron Bowl was a "neutral site". It was a BS claim, and decades of Birmingham city officials, mayors, stadium employees, Alabama fans knew but tried perpetuating that image that was a ridiculous farce. Plus, by the late 80's, Legion Field had seen its more prosperous days, the surrounding neighborhoods in downtown metro area were getting rougher, and it wasnt such a nice, pleasant game-day experience anymore as it had perhaps been back in the 1960's and 70's. So, thats why we eventually asked, (and then demanded) that our Iron Bowl annual rivalry be an actual home-and-away series.

For 2-3 generations, partly including mine, Legion Field was never a " neutral playing site" nor did we feel like we wanted to be there every year playing Bama in the Iron Bowl. It was a situation forced upon us in the late 1940s when the Alabama state legislature requested the near-41 year dormant Iron Bowl rivalry played again and we were remanded to accept less-than-equal circumstances that benefited Alabama then and increasingly more so as the next 4 decades past. Legion Field was only a somewhat pleasant enjoyable place when we beat Alabama, which didn't happen too much during the 1970's and we only begun to tilt the rivalry then in our advantage by the time Auburn's president, HC Pat Dye, told their Alabama counterparts and Ala. state legislature the long-running bullshirt, one-sided deal doesn't work for us, anymore. And it never made any real sense to me.

But don't just take my word for it. Legendary former AU HC Shug Jordan once said he'd rather play the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa than keep having to reinforce the false, misleading narrative of being forced to play Alabama every year in the so-called "neutral site" of Birmingham's Legion Field, Bama's essential 2nd home stadium until the late 1990's. He saw through the forced illusion or mirage decades before other Auburn fans got their faces deservedly slapped figuratively for ever believing such BS.

Bump both of you...lol. Legion Field is the ONLY stadium I recognize back home. (other than Albert J. Sloan- Alumni Stadium )

man I remember watching that kick on TV. I had only been in NOLA one or two years so I was a new Saints fan. We thought that was real heartbreak back then lol
Same for me, but I got an even bigger jolt when my Mom (whose maiden name was Lansford) told me the next day not to complain so much because "the Rams' kicker is your second cousin."
As I recall, that made me even angrier.
