Thoughts on Brees as an Announcer Last Night? (1 Viewer)

He flat out ignored Tirico when he mentioned the QB meetings with Sean the day before the games. Maybe he was distracted while watching the action, or he didn't want to talk about it.....but he basically said nothing. It was a bit odd, but they moved on quickly.

This was also my first time hearing Brees call a game. He's a natural & will get better and better as he learns the craft.

He did ok. A little stiff but I think if he was calling a non Saints game he’d probably be more relaxed. He just has to “find his voice” as they say. He definitely has the knowledge to be successful

He’s a natural at it. Although, you can tell last night, that he was a bit frustrated with what he was seeing from our team. And of course he should be. He was probably also emotional bc he didn’t think it would be this bad, the year after he was gone. I mean, things have done a complete 180 in just 4 weeks

I thought that he did well. Is it any surprise at all that Drew Brees would be well-prepared for any job that he does? And he's only partway through his first year.

I personally kinda hate to see him doing the talking head thing, when he would be such an outstanding coach. But, I get it. More stable family life, kids getting older, less stress, etc. And maybe he'll take the coaching road one day. Meanwhile, I'll enjoy listening to him in the booth.

I think he’ll be a natural after he’s had this first season in the books. It’s great listening to him setting up the offensive plays and calling out the play before the ball is even snapped…..easy to see why he was so great for so long.

Drew is a consummate professional and he will bring that to his announcing game the same way he brought it to the field. Learn, study, practice...

I'm a huge Brees fan but thought he was terrible for most of the games. He was like a vending machine for cliches, repetitive when it came to talking about deep drops and Trevor not stepping up in the pocket which was unfair because the whole game he had interior defensive linemen running free up the middle making it impossible to step up. Other times I feel like he wasn't nearly critical enough of Trevor for some wildly inaccurate throws, particularly on the two point conversion. It felt really weird listenting to a guy that was average at best calling the game at the same time knowing if he was on the field it the outcome of the game would be completely different. It was an incredibly odd feeling. I feel like he was being really kind by not calling out Payton for being ultra conservative on first down and continually putting Trevor in terrible positions. I felt like he should have mentioned that Payton should be calling plays to move Trevor around some with designed roll outs to prevent defenses from teeing off. Felt like he was trying too hard to be impartial.

I couldn't help but think how this team with Brees' leadership and ability to manage a game could have a realistic chance at a Super Bowl this season. It went through my head that Michael Thomas probably finds a way to be healthy and on the field, that AK probably doesn't get hurt because we didn't have to rely on him so much. That Brees would be burning teams that now come in with the mindset of blitz every play when he was the GOAT against the blitz. I can't help but think the defense would be able to stay fresh because he is the most accurate QB in history and even last season he was really good at sustaining drives, flipping field position and keeping the defense fresh. I can't help but think this is a game more like the Patriots game in which we were so beat up with injuries nobody gave us a chance to win and he rallies the team for an emotional victory at home while we are still battling it out for the #1 seed. I can't help but think about how he averaged more points per drive in the final two minuts of the half last season than any QB in history and how he would be flipping momentum going into the half. I couldn't help but think the the last 4 games we scored a combined 23 points in the first 3 quarters and 7 of those came from a turnover the defense inside the opponents 5 yard line and that is worst than any 4 games in the 16 years Brees' played here. I can't help but think over the last 4 games the defense held the opposition to less yards per play than they did for 15 of the 16 seasons under Brees.

I did love when he put Eminem on notice by calling the long play. Unfortunately though, it was another reminder that he is still the best person in the world to run the offense that was on the field.

As weird as it felt for me, it had to be a Million times worse for Brees. Imagine sitting up there trying to call a game knowing you could be down there with the Who Dat Nation going nuts on a nationally televised game and that you would be taking this team to the playoffs. Imagine being up there knowing you didn't get to play in front of the crowd the entire previous season and you are being walked off at halftime. Imagine being up there critiquing your coach and former players on national television. Imagine being up there trying not to say, "Do you miss me yet" when Trevor sails the 2 point conversion into the stands or when the Saints had 68 yards of offense mid way through the third quarter. Imagine being up there trying to show the country that you are not being partial when you spent the last 16 years being the face of both the franchise and city. Imagine being up there when it was by far your biggest opportunity to date as a play by play announcer. And if for some reason you don't think sitting in that booth and not being on the field wasn't driving Brees nuts you haven't been paying attention the last two decades.

I thought it was unfair he was put in that position on his day and trying to judge him off that game is pointless.
