After the first three I was like, "meh, but maybe...". After ep. 4 I found myself even less interested. Will try one more...

Anyone who's trying this show without having read the books, and is getting overwhelmed with all the people being thrown at you, here's a handy cheat to keep them straight:

Rand - Harry
Mat - Ron
Perrin - Neville
Egwene - Hermione

That actually helps because I’m completely unfamiliar with the series. Just finished 4 and it’s enjoyable, not Hawkeye exciting, but I’ll watch.

I must be a glutton for punishment b/c I gave it another chance. Fell asleep in the middle of ep3. Finished it the next day. But it got worse with ep4. I turned it off before it was over. The script is just not good. I lost count how many times I found myself frowning watching. Some things are okay, like the scenery. A couple of actors are okay, but overall I don't feel any connection. They seem hollow or forced, something, I can't really describe it. They added frivolous things, like Perrin having a wife, but it seems forced and just a lame to invent a different motivation for leaving, or something. And thats a continuing trend, the additions of things that didn't happen in the book don't add anything or make it better than what they subtracted from the book.

I guess they erased Min, which from recollection they should have met while fleeing the two rivers. Instead that interaction seems to have been replaced with whitecloaks in questionable wardrobe choices and their modern, perfectly styled hair.

that old ferryman jumping back into the water, swimming towards a throng of monsters was dumb. Theres no way a person would look at that on the other side and go "yep. I have a chance to make it past them"

Chatty Lan sitting around a campfire and chumming it up with pals is so cringe. That was not the Lan from the books.

Overly dramatic/melodramatic moments that just make me roll my eyes. That fight scene at the end of ep4 was something that looked low budged.

Meanwhile on reddit people are going crazy over it like it is the best thing ever. Some even apparently moved to tears. I just don't see what they see.

The sadness people are having over this series because they read the books is equal to my sadness over Star Wars Ep 7 - 9 after reading all the expanded universe books.

He goes there every year for bel tine, he knows the 5 emond fielders cause he talked to them every year. Now they just randomly met Thom on the run. Thom was my favorite character in the early books.

Thom had never been to Emond's Field before that fateful Bel Tine. It was the first time a gleeman had visited in many, many years. He never knew any of the Emond Fielders before. He bonded with Mat and Rand to some degree as the fled on the road to Baerlon, teaching them to juggle and such. But that was it.

I'm done watching the show unless someone tells me it gets drastically better, but I had wondered how they were going to depict the 3 women falling in love with Rand, and being more or less ok with each other sharing him. It's very Japanese harem anime-ish.

Right, my theory is the writers decided to have that interaction with the white cloaks instead of them going to Baerlon and interacting with Min. just a guess on my part.

The Dragon is a boy. If the shows wants to pretend it can be either…then whatever. But you can’t change that for the show…you might as well not even make the show if you plan to alienate the readers like that. So far, I think that the modifications, additions, and omissions have been minor, so whatever. It’s not going to be exactly like the books which is a good thing because the books were almost 10 books too long

Your memory is off. He’s not Gandalf. He’d never been there before.

On the fantasy side, I have read and re-read LOTR over the years and am all in. I binge-read all of the GOT books. But I have zero interest whatsoever in anything Harry Potter related. I read the first few Narnias but lost interest after the first few.

Any advice on this one? Will I be able to tell quickly if I am into it or does it take a while to develop?

In my opinion, the first 6 books are great. But after that, Jordan was just writing for roof. I never made it all the way to the Sanderson ones

On the fantasy side, I have read and re-read LOTR over the years and am all in. I binge-read all of the GOT books. But I have zero interest whatsoever in anything Harry Potter related. I read the first few Narnias but lost interest after the first few.

I enjoyed all the books you mention above. Though i re-read (or tried to) LOTR for the first time since high school recently and could not get through it. I liked these books, so i would say go for it. My only complaint was how simplistic some of the female characters were written (IMO)

As someone who dropped the series around book 5 and never picked it backup. I would read it. The first three books are some of the best fantasy out there. The only things I would rate higher are: LOTR, ASOIAF, Earthsea Trilogy, and Kingkiller chronicles.

It’s a solid book series. It’s not my favorite. But I always knew that it’d likely be better as a TV series than a book series because it gets really long winded. I made it through the first handful of novels. Sanderson is my favorite fantasy writer, so hopefully I can eventually get through the entire book series one day, but I want to watch the TV series first to make the book read a little more manageable so I can skim up to the Sanderson books.
