Or you can sign Winston for 2 or 3 years and take a shot if the right QB falls to the 2nd or 3rd round. That way you aren't forcing a pick and you still have a starting QB with the potential to be very good while a young QB develops.
I'm fine with that. But I want the QB prospect to be relatively high, not another 4th round pick.

And I'm of the opinion that drafted a QB is a wasted pick. Even though there are injuries, starting this season, we had 4 QBs and we went 4-2 with the person who was picked as starter. Here is something that actual evaluators of talent might look at that us simple fans might take for granted. Some might disregard what was done on the field but Jameis was Top 10 in most statistical categories before he went down. With the exception of yards (due to the lack of attempts) and completion percentage (even though he is top 3 in drop rate percentage and we ignore throwaways), he was top 10 and in a lot of categories top 5.

I'm a big Winston guy, to the point where I was called a Taysom hater, but there were very obvious deficiencies in his game. Yards and completion percentage are pretty important stats as well.

I'd love to re-sign him. I'm just not of the mind he's the starter for the next 10 years, and if he's not, you need to draft someone eventually because holding out hope for massive trades for Russell Wilson isn't a strategy.

Don’t even draft one this year. Hold out another two years if possible and draft Bryce Young out of Alabama if you can get him. That kid is ice water under fire. But that would probably be wishful thinking.

And this is while playing with a rag tag receiver group while most of the league has a defined WR1 and WR2. And the crazy this is he was only getting better. We might not take stock into this insignificant detail but the fact that someone who was ragged for throwing interceptions had the highest TD to Interception rate when changing systems might be key to some evaluators, especially when the same QB lead the league in yards and 2nd in TDs that same season.

Not counting throwaways, he was 71% from behind the LOS to 10 yards and 63% on intermediate throws (10-19 yards), *shrugs*
Underhill was all over Jameis’s deficiencies in the short and intermediate passing game. He had trouble hitting receivers in stride on these throws and didn’t seem to see the middle of the field well. How many passing yards was our offense putting up under Jameis compared to Brees? Jameis still had a long way to go before becoming the kind of qb who can win in the playoffs. Relying on him to come back and be that guy would be rolling the dice IMO.

You are right about the yards, but the upside is that he was 5-2 in games started this year. Extrapolate that and this would have been a playoff team. Can’t overlook that. I’d take that chance if he comes back healthy over drafting a QB. Most pressing need is #2 WR and #2 CB. Ohio Stste has been good to the Saints. I’d go to the well again.

I wouldn’t say Jameis was making excellent progress. He was taking care of the ball for the most part and had definitely brought the vertical game back to our offense. But he was subpar at the short passing/screen game and didn’t have much of an intermediate passing game. He was pretty good at scrambling, but I think sometimes he had to scramble b/c he was missing the early/hot read. He was not doing badly, but I didn’t see a lot of development to his game.
He was 5-2 with a gutted roster and other obstacles including a hurricane dislocation. Saints haven’t won a game he did not start this year. Jameis has a high ceiling working under Payton. It would take a real sure thing for Payton to use draft capital or trade players to bring in someone else .

None of the above.

They will roll with Winston/Taysom and continue to develop Book. Unless a highly rated QB falls at the top of their grouping when they pick (see Saints BPA draft process) they will go for other positions.

Plus, there just isn't a lot of talent there this year.
They have their guy in Book. They will draft offensive talent to build up the offense and possibly resign Winston to another one year deal but it's going to be another open competition and I think Payton likes Book and will look to take advantage of his skillset based off the offense he ran at ND as he can mix in the read option with both he and Hill which brings another element to the offense which he has seen first hand playing teams like the Eagles and Bills back to back

I think it would be cool to have a 4th rd pick evolve into a franchise QB, but this is all just hopeful speculation. Don’t be too disappointed if things don’t turn out as you “predict “ they will. I hope you are right, but lack of evidence is too overwhelming at this point.

Trust and timing plays a lot into that. We you know you are heavily scrutinized for every play, especially turnovers, how many risk would be willing to take down the middle with our group of WRs. But who knows but that was getting better and cleaned up as the season went on. But the fact still remains that his completion percentages on those throws are still higher than most favorites in the league and those that we are calling the best in the league. Hence the fact that while Underhill can be all of those "deficiencies," he is still statistically a top 10 QB while playing with subpar skill players.

And why are you bring Brees into this, especially when he has never played with an offense THIS decimated? Even with that, Jameis was trending upwards in yards while being on pace to throw for more passing TDs than Drew has since 2016 with lesser talent at WR.

I made mention of that. We all know that he was trending up from a yardage perspective and everyone was like "he sucks from 0-20," when in reality, dude is 69% from behind the LOS to 20 yards, when not taking throwaways into account, and this is including bad passes and drops. And on the topic of drops, he is #3 in the league in drop percentage. I'm not saying that everything he did was perfect because it's plenty that was missed but a lot of people can't see the forest for the trees. People are wanting to draft a QB from this trashbag draft or bring in someone that, by most advanced metrics, our QB was better than with less offensive weapons.

I heard the were working on a deal to land a deal for a #1 overall with a rocket arm and who is intimately familiar with our scheme and who wants to be here. Some guy from FSU.
As a backup??? I’m good with that

I have a write-in submission for a collegiate QB that I believe can be drafted on the 2nd or 3rd day, that has enormous upside and all of the tools to succeed in the right situation.

Jayden Daniels, QB, Arizona State

Daniels reminds me of a better version of Adrian McPherson (prior to being run over by the Titans mascot in a golf cart). He also has a little bit of former ASU QB Jake Plummer to him. Daniels has above average running/scrambling ability, and he has a legit cannon of an arm and can “flick it 50 yards effortlessly”.
At 6’3, Daniels has the height to see the field, but at only 185lbs, he will need to add some weight to hold up to the rigors of playing QB in the NFL. I think he could add 20lbs and not lose his quickness and mobility.

I rarely pay attention to QB's too much at this point, as I spend most of my time with RB and WR. But it really is time for the Saints. The time was actually 2-3 years ago. You can't just keep kicking the can down the road in today's NFL...you need a QB to compete. I don't think that anyone in the room is our future. I guess that there is hope in Book, but lets be real, he's a 4th round pick who currently is the Saints fourth team QB that cannot get playing time behind Trevor Siemian. If there's ever a reason to be highly skeptical...it's that.

I'll start looking over the next month and give my input when I feel a little more informed.

I think you are a bit cavalier, about how Jameis doesn't measure up to a HOF QB w/ all the NFL passing records. Winston is a playoff QB w/ Sean today. You just don't see it. You are correct though, about Jameis not fitting our system. He has many hick ups to over come in our system. But, he is a playoff QB in a vertical system, given weapons.

Winston also only had two preseason games, after splitting much needed snaps w/ a QB who hasn't even played a down yet as QB1 or QB2. He beat GB and the Patts with out a kicker.
