So tell me again why Ian Book can’t start or play? (1 Viewer)

I ask you back the question.

Do you think that Sean Payton is trying every week to get the team in the best position to win?

Do you think we as fans know something that is skipping on Sean Payton and the rest of the coaching staff?

Have Ian Book show enough during practice that he has enough to be better than the current options at quarterback.

I know we are getting impatient with the way the season is going, but certainly Sean Payton is not thinking about next year, he is thinking about the cowboys.

I don't know if we will see Ian Book or not this season, but I am sure he will be there if Sean considers he is the best option to win the next game, whenever that may be.

I ask you this, then: Are you not entertained?
Because I am not. And that's why I watch.

I wouldn't want to destroy his young career before it even has a chance to take off.

Bingo!

With all the injuries & lack of true weapons, why fool with his confidence ??

He's too young to be thrown into the fire.. There is a reason CSP is holding him back.. He'll get his time, it's just not "right" now.

NW.

He's a career back-up that's not even good enough to be a back-up at the moment because he's a rookie QB?
Danny Wuerffle, Steve Walsh, Heath Shuler, Chase Daniels. We were all excited when they were drafted after successful college careers.
Chase was probably the most successful of the group.
In my opinion, Book falls into this group. Time will tell.

That's a great question and I don't think there is an easy answer to it.

I'm really starting to think Book is the future and CSP is developing/protecting that future. As stated in the which rookie QB to draft thread. Are any of the incoming rookies that much better than Book to spend a first? I'm not sure they are and that pick can be used to provide protection on offense. The team was somewhat competitive with backup WRs, but completely fell apart when the line got decimated.

CSP/ML entered the season with the task of replacing a HOF on a team with a championship roster, but also in cap hell and a reduced salary cap. They also weren't picking towards the top of the draft due to all of the recent success. He decided to go with 4 QBs to provide options. Playing for the now and also preparing for the future.

QB1: Winston - Uber talent, mistake prone QB that was allowed to pick up bad habits through college and his early NFL career due to coaching styles.

QB2: Hill - Athletic/older/Swiss Army Knife/Winning QB as QB1, but he is older and his also has a few bad habits that may hold him back as a fulltime NFL QB1. However, he does has the skills for a dual threat QB, so that is intriguing. OTOH, he has a huge impact in the other positions he can play especially FB, TE and WR.

QB3: Siemian - Safety net. Career backup after he followed Manning in Denver. Nothing jumps off the screen as QB1 material, but a backup who is prepared and ready when called on.

QB4: Book - Rookie that fits the Parcels mold.

Plan A:
CSP the QB guru decided to try and fix an uber talented mistake prone QB in Winston. He was holding Winston back to reduce the mistakes. Is that sustainable long term? The Rams shipped Goff out of town because he was holding back McVay's offense. Stafford came in and it allowed McVay to open up his playbook and that team was clicking. Now they aren't, but early in the season it was similar to when Brees allowed CSP to open his entire playbook. That plan got derailed when Winston got injured.

Plan B:
Dual threat Hill offense. Derailed due to Hill's concussion and foot injury. Looks like he may be getting a start, so that's cool.

Plan C:
Safety net. Put Siemian in to keep the team afloat through the adversity. Injuries piled up at significant positions making it nearly impossible to field a NFL level competitive team.

Plan D:
The Rookie. The David Carr effect, bad offensive lines/teams and rookie QBs don't mix well. Starting rookie QBs is all the rage right now, but it also could be the exception and not the rule. Did sitting a year hurt Brady, Mahomes, Rodgers (3 years), etc? Does throwing Book out there with a line that provides no protection make sense? What about throwing the rookie out there with that line and skill position players that are limited? CSP saw Book in the preseason, he also sees him in practice. If Book was having problems learning the system would he put a rookie QB in charge of personnel groupings when the coaches were out due to covid protocols? I don't think so. Although Payton is an offensive genius his mentor is Parcels and while Payton may be innovative and have huge balls, he is also old school in some aspects and developing a QB by allowing them to sit and watch looks to be one of those old school ways.

But what about Taysom's new contract? So what. They were going to have to resign him to get rid of that previous contract and now they have him locked up as a Swiss Army Knife playmaker with some incentives that kick in should he become QB1. That's good for both sides.

I ask you this, then: Are you not entertained?
Because I am not. And that's why I watch.
I can no longer evaluate Saints games on an ‘entertainment’ scale
It’s not a chore, nor is it a ritual anymore either
I think it’s more like visiting family - like a duty. I don’t expect to be angry nor overjoyed, but either are entirely possible
Of course the love is there, but it’s certainly not as simple a relationship as it used to be

I don’t think Book is being considered because, Trevor is not the problem. When a team does poorly, the quarterback and or coach are automatically assumed to be the issue. People don’t consider other factors such as dropping passes.

I think the main problem is teamwork with new backup players. This team has not practiced, planned, etc prior to the injuries.
Brees also pointed out in our Thanksgiving game that we have a lot of young inexperienced WRs playing. Saying it takes reps and chemistry with the QB on what needs to be successful in this offense.

Coach probably does not want to put him in with the saints still in the running for a playoff berth, couple that with the mounting injuries you don't want to throw a rookie QB into the fire with little to no help around him.

SP being a former QB understands it better than anyone I can promise you that. You can ruin a QB starting him when he is not ready to start. History is littered with QB's who have been thrown to the wolves and had their confidence shredded. SP knows what our WR and TE core is and what it is not more importantly. The supporting cast needed simply is not there. The reps from training camp aren't there that we had to split between Jameis and Hill. He is not going to ruin Book this early in his career when it is not the proper time. I think we have something in this guy, all those teams calling about him earlier in the year had scouted him as well. Let's do right by him

I am certainly not entertained, but I have trust in n the current staff. Something I didn’t have during the Haslett and Ditka years, to concentrate only in previous administrations.

Maybe I missed it somewhere on another thread but why can’t Ian Book okay instead of Trevor or an injured Hill? I mean is he injured too? It’s not like he would be the first rookie QB to play in a regular season game. I mean I just don’t get it sometimes with this coaching staff. You have nothing to lose at this point.
You should ask coach Payton. Book has gotten less than 30 snaps with anybody other than the scout team. He is essentially taking a redshirt. I didn’t make that up. Look at his roster status and the news on what he has been doing in practice since the season started.
