I've never been more excited about a QB who threw 4 picks (2 Viewers)

When you are desperate you do desperate things. No injury and some tackles may have led to a different outcome and win or lose it was a whole lot more satisfying than Siemien so what the hell? Roll the dice and next year we'll have Winston as QB and Hill as the freak he is and all will be right in the world.
I guess the conversation is about who is more exciting now, right. Yes, Taysom gives us a spark but I do think Trevor's experience comes in handy. It's a bunch of bad options at this point, so I guess desperation wins out.

The pros for Taysom

-He did indeed seem to give the team a spark. There was more energy than in recent games.

-His running ability of course. I wish Payton called more run plays. Ingram was feeling it too but they went too pass happy.

The cons

-The turnovers were awful. You can’t sugarcoat that. Was it his broken finger? I don’t know. But he made some truly bad decisions.

-He just can’t read defenses.

All in all it was bad. The offensive line stinks right now and he did injure his finger. but I can’t give TH a mulligan completely. The thing is I don’t think there’s anything else to do at this point. They’ve given him a nice contract. They need to see if he grows and improves.

But I’m with David I think they have to get Winston back and try to move forward with him. However I do think if Hill puts up a string of pitiful performances like this they should let Book play at least the final game. We need the evaluation and if one rough game destroys his confidence then he wasn’t going to be the answer anyway.

Taysom Hill is a weapon that should be on the field for damn near every snap. If Payton could find a way to have him in with TS playing QB we might be able to take advantage of Hill's ability as a TE/RB/QB. Line him up in the backfield with AK or Ingram or with both of them and pitch it to him on the outside. If he has running room, let him take off. If there's someone open let him throw it.

And we've now paid him to the extent that he needs to be on the field nearly every play.

But not as the QB.

Keep in mind that this was Taysom Hill’s 5th career start at QB! …and the first of this season.

Go look at some other QBs stats over their first 5 starts in the NFL, and I think you’d see my point. Justin Fields (for example) has played exclusively QB since HS… I don’t think anyone would say that Fields isn’t a better QB prospect than Taysom… and Fields’ first 5 starts were pretty much trash. Trevor Lawrence was 0-5 w/ 8INTs… etc…

👆🏻 and those guys didn’t have a 4-5 year gap between starts from college to the pros.

Yet… folks are dug-in with their belief that Taysom is NOT a QB, yada yada yada….

Do you honestly believe that he does not have the capability to improve? …to gain more confidence? …to have the game slow down for him as a QB?

I don’t think he’s a long-term answer at QB, but only because of his age and play style… I absolutely believe that he will improve as he continues to focus on being a full-time QB for the rest of this season (provided he stays healthy, and we don’t hear that his finger is shattered and his season is over on Wednesday) 😖

Like Jameis I'm not making a decision off of one game. I expect almost anyone to get behind that line with our receivers to struggle. There is no way his finger wasn't bothering him and likely causing him to struggle passing. However, it wasn't impacting his brain and he made some really bad decisions in the 4th quarter.

Payton's brain I am also questioning. His short yardage play calling isn't only bad, it's been among the worst in the league this season. When Taysom was gashing the Dallas defense with the run, 4th and 2 comes up which everyone is thinking Hill run. You don't have to run him in that spot but you have to put him shotgun and make the defense respect the run to open anything else up. That was probably the most disappointing part of the night. I expect CSP to at least put guys in the best position to succeed and that was a failure. Then when Dallas waited until 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter, up two scores to go hurry up for the first time all night after a pass that appeared to be trapped, you have to throw the challenge flag.

Also, refs are trash still but that is to be expected.

Forgive me if I am not excited:

Jameis Winston as QB 14TDS to 3INTs for the season - Prove it deals.

Taysom Hill as QB 2TDs to 5INTs Why is Taysom the highest paid QB on the roster, and signed mid Season to a new contract 10 mill a yr.

Tervor Siemian as QB 9TDs to 3INTs for the season - Prove it deals.

This thread is not about next year. Winston is out for the season. You won't find any posts from me this season doing anything but supporting Winston and hoping he returns next season to start. I don't believe Winston needs a prove it deal at all; he's already proven it.

That said, we have something unique with Taysom at QB, and if you lower your expectations, you might find yourself enjoying what most believe is already a lost season. I choose to enjoy what I am watching rather than get mad about it.

What game did you watch?

He was the whole offense.

Did you miss Deonte Harris weaving his way for a 70 yard TD after a short dump off? Take that out and the offense scored 10 points. You are right that most of that was due to Hill but 10 points in a game isn't going to cut it. (Even 17 isn't going to cut it.) He's the best QB we have that can play this year, mostly due to the fact that he can run and his passing is at least good enough to hit most wide open receivers (other than TQS apparently), but he also makes some really bad decisions. Also, although the results aren't really better than Siemian, he is a lot more entertaining and at least the offense is moving the ball between turnovers. I'll take that given that this year is really over anyway.

Payton's play calling wasn't perfect. But overall, he called an amazing game last night. He kept Dallas guessing, used rub routes to create natural picks against the man to man defense, picked perfect times to run screens, and mixed in Hill's running perfectly. You can quibble with some calls, but it was an overall masterful job of offensive play calling with a QB that has issues in the passing game, a QB with an injured finger on his throwing hand, two starting tackles out, RB1 out, WR1 out, and TE1 out.

I've never seen a guy acting like a QB jump over a defensive player like that. He did make some nice throws early but Trevor is a better decision-maker than Taysom by a mile. Hill may be the most inexperienced starting QB in the league right now outside of rooks. That said, I expect Sean to double down and do it again.
After Drew pointed out that Trevor was dropping too far back and not stepping up in the pocket it became frustrating to watch him. I know we're down tackles but dropping 15 yards back doesn't help them at all

I think Hill can improve, but he's also 31 years old so he doesn't have much time to do it. I'm all for giving him the starts the rest of the year to get better, but given how long he has been in the system learning under Brees, you would think that if he was going to end up being good, he would be further along at this point. But, he could surprise me and make some leaps in the next few weeks.

But, you can't compare him to a rookie QB with only 5 starts given how long he has been in the system, how long he learned under Brees, and how many snaps he has played at both QB and other positions for several years.

I didn't notice that in his first couple of starts and seems all the QBs seem to be compensating for our line and receiver issues. I worry about all running QBs but if Taysom continues to run like that he will not be starting long. It's exciting but dangerous.

You needed Drew to say something about it before you got upset about TS's dropbacks?

That's kind of the problem w/ almost everything today, we wait for people we look up to, to have an opinion on something before we make up our own mind. TS's dropbacks didn't bother me because the line play was bad and has been bad for a while...going back to when that same O-line - actually scratch that, the guys who started over half these guys - got Drew's ribs crushed...I found it kinda humorous actually that he suggested TS step into the (non)pocket.

Not saying you have been doing this because maybe you haven't, but people don't get to point to a 3-1 record last year and then in turn around and complain about only starting 5 games. Hill has been on the team since 2017 and involved on the offensive side of the ball heavily since 2018. he played QB in preseason in 2018, 2019 and this year. He's being paid very well. I don't think it's too much of an expectation for him to make better decisions. If it is, he shouldn't be touted as an NFL caliber starting QB.
