Germany announces national lockdown for unvaccinated:

This would indicate to me that German officials and scientists aren't too concerned with vaccinated people and Omicron. Would that be because they have already started to realize that Omicron doesn't pose much of a threat to vaccinated, but they don't want to come out and say it just yet?

Unvaccinated people will be banned from accessing all but the most essential businesses, such as supermarkets and pharmacies, to curb the spread of coronavirus

Well, no.

They wouldn't know that just yet. All we have at this point is early indications still. It takes weeks to get a more definite idea, and longer still for it to be detailed enough for policy-making on a national scale (because, for example, if you're looking at a highly transmissible variant that many people are likely to be exposed to, even just a small percentage difference in effectiveness against serious illness can be significant, especially in terms of overall risk to healthcare provision).

This is a reaction to the big surge in cases Germany is already experiencing. They already have a lot of measures in place, so short of lockdowns for everyone which they're presumably trying to avoid, vaccine requirements for accessing non-essential spaces is about all they've got really.

Interesting the difference in tone between this story and the cnbc article that spells doom and gloom, oh wait I mean dominate and overwhelm.

The headline is misleading in the opposite way to doom and gloom ones.

India isn't seeing the 'impact of Omicron blunted by vaccination, prior infections' in the sense of they're looking and that's what's happening now.

As the article goes on to say, they're 'seeing' it in the sense their health ministry expects that to happen, on the basis of what can only be optimism at this point, since we don't have the data to show that will definitely be the case. To be clear, that's the optimistic view, the pessimistic view would be those will provide less protection against Omicron, and the realistic view would be that we don't know yet (although there's some early indications prior infection may not be as protective against infection from Omicron as we'd like).

Both articles run 100% in opposite directions, each based off of a single person speculating.

Here's the good news. The one that thinks Omnicron will "Overwhelm" the world is basically saying it will do so much in the same way Delta did and he thinks vaccines will hold up at a pretty good level. This means even he thinks that people that have been fully vaccinated or have antibodies from previous infections will generally do well.

It's also worth noting that he is comparing the timeline of Delta in March to Omicron right now. In March Delta was already well established globally with about 10% of infections. Omicron is less than 1%. So the 6 month timeframe is the much more likely scenario in that 3-6 month guess.

The one point that is probably the most accurate is the undeveloped world is in trouble.

What’s the next name after Omorican or whatever it is called? Good thing I did not throw away my masks. Going to store today to stock up on my TP and Bounty towels.

Oh and I got my booster yesterday. All is good.
