Good article on Book not starting (Duncan) (2 Viewers)

Career clocks ticking. We watched our future HOF QB Brees come off the field for plays but TS gets to continue to play Hill injured gets to continue those are guys who should be coming off the field to give plays to Book. This is a QB and offense driven team not defense. We gave a lot of weapons up on O to build a D. Now we have a issue with QB play and we drafted a nice QB but don't play him while we have this QB problem. So we wait until we get a good QB that's winning then take him off the field and see what Book got right ? Sorry for my rant I'm sure I'm missing the point somewhere.
agreed. he should play. we already know what tay can do. no reason to let tay get further injured with a crappy line and then have even more dead money. play tay @ RPO and ST i'm all for it. but i don't think tay can show us anything else that he hasn't shown us already. might as well let ian get real game play in.

Saints will never have a playoff team with Ian Book as their starting QB. So I’m not concerned with playing him now. In my opinion, I hope Saints find that out sooner rather than later. And again only my opinion but the Daints will be better off losing out than winning a couple of meaningless December games. Only way to get back to great again soon is to find their next franchise QB and draft well. Losing out will give them their best chance of doing that.

Only problem with a high drafted QB this year is that none of them scream NFL QB . Is there some potential there ? Yes . Its a down year for QB in this draft . Matt Corral for example is top of the board for alot of people . His stats , 8277 yards , 57 TDs to 22 INTs 68% comp , 18 rushing TDs . Had 15 fumbles . Ian Book as a comparison , 8948 yards 72 TDs to 20 Ints, 63.8 comp % , 17 Rushing TDs , 11 fumbles . Book was the winningest QB in Notre Dame history 30-5

We lose the next game or 2 and I think Book plays. Our playoffs are hanging by a thread. I think he sees time this year

So basically they feel Book is our QB of the future. OK cool. While Book may look great in practice and in the film room they don't know how he'll look in "live action". I totally understand them not wanting to kill the kid's confidence playing behind a bad oline and no threats at receiver, but they'll need to let him play sooner or later or else we'll go into next year with a huge question mark at the most important position. We might have the chance for trade for a Russ or a Watson, and worst-case we may be looking at another season with Taysom starting if Book isn't the guy.

Give the kid some live reps.
YOU don't know how he will look in live action, what do you think practice is? live action! the defense is practicing the same coverages they will play on gameday, he proving himself in the film study and when he gets on the practice field executes the offense. These guys are not coming into the pro's with no concept on coverages and preparation.

I do understand the point your trying to make its just a weak argument to me because every other rookie whether it be LB, CB, S, DT. DE. OT, WR. RB never gets that argument as to why not to play them but because he is a QB all of a sudden he not ready because he's never played in the league but we have an UDFA WR starting.

It's believable that the injuries and the fact we are still in contention for a playoff spot is why Book has not seen the field and once we are mathematically eliminated we will see Book get his live reps.

The article talks about SP doing the same thing with Romo, made him sit 3 years promising that he would get his chance with SP thought he was ready. Said treating Book the same way

Practice for a 3rd string quarterback is not live action. He's getting reps with 2nd and 3rd stringers going against 2nd and 3rd stringers on defense. I'm not saying that he isn't developing, because the time he's getting in practice and the film room is crazy valuable but I want to make it clear that it's no where close to live action. Even if he was getting reps with the starters - still no where near as close to what he'd see from defenses on Sunday. It's not full speed, and he can't get touched in practice. Things change all of a sudden when you have a defense motivated to hit you on every single play.

If we become eliminated I sure hope we get to see him, because I think the reps with bullets truly flying will be useful for his development. Given the state of our team, I don't think it'll be fair to make a full judgement on him based on a small sample size with a less than talented offense struggling with injuries, but I do think he needs the reps and there would be no better time to get him that experience.

I think Payton see's the same potential in Book its not hard to piece together . Coach would not waste a roster spot unless he was sold on him , these injuries kind of prove that when roster spots are at a premium for us . Payton had Vinny Testaverde in 04 and Drew Bledsoe in 05 to sit Romo . As soon as Bledsoe showed decline in 06 but was not playing bad , Parcells made the switch to Romo . That was probably the plan and may still be . I see Taysoms contract as a sign of that being the plan , you sign him to that if he is the stop gap too Book . Weather this year or next . I could see Book playing at some point this year but either way it seems like it could be him and Taysom competing in Camp next year to start . Again I dont think coach Payton uses the roster spot in a season like this with half the team on IR to protect a potential back up QB . They see something no doubt

I mean, who would put a rookie QB on the field when only 3 starting offensive players remain?

Lunacy....you want to kill his confidence? play him and he goes the way of Patrick Ramsey....
Agree, I want Book to play but only if we have Armstead and Ramzchk healthy , Kamara would really help if he is at no risk of prolonging his injury .

Wow haven't seen that name in a while.

Agreed he should only go in when Kamara and probably both tackles are back, if that.

The talent of the supporting cast on the offense right now is historically bad. The defense has been keeping the team in games way longer than the offense deserves and is masking how bad they really are.

You could put last week's entire starting offense on the practice squad right now and no more than two players would get claimed. No rookie should ever be asked to lift that kind of team up.
